OK guys - here is the deal - I am going with my wife to be amongst the millions of idiots that stand out in the cold for 6-12 hours so we can watch the ball drop in NYC. (check another off of the bucket list)

Around 6pm they start shutting down the streets and you get placed into 'pens' once you are in the pen you cannot leave or you have to leave for good.

So what do you think I should have on me to ensure all is well.

Keep in mind - I cannot have a backpack or anything larger than a small camera case. Even for women - larger purses are NOT allowed. There are metal detectors so no steel-based blades. All people get the wand for metal on them. Any and all bags including shopping bags are searched.

I just want to feel secure, and ensure to my best ability the safety of my wife and I in the situation given.

You are a crafty bunch - I look forward to hearing some creative ideas.

As a lifelong resident of NYC, I went down to Times Square one New Years. What I saw on the way into the Square worried me. What I saw when I was in the middle of it convinced me to get out.

This was before barricades, before 911 so I was armed. I saw the Guardian Angels a few feet from me as they took down and beat a purse snatcher, and the police a few feet on my other side laughed and turned away.

Not safe, not a good place to be, and now it's overcontrolled but too many people are ... unreliable. There are so many great places to go in the City, dining, dancing ... freezing is not high on my list.

The first rule of self defense is: don't go there.

Far, far too many people in far too small an area. I also lived in NYC for 30 years and I did the Times Square on New Years Eve thing once and would never again put myself in such a situation.

If you really want to check it out for yourself, I understand, but have an alternative plan, and when you get close enough to realize just how insane the situation there is, leave and follow your back-up plan. The whole of Manhattan is one big party on NYE and there is really no reason to subject yourself to Times Square.

Have fun and be safe.

Personally, I'd head down to lower Manhattan early and stay late.

But let's not rule out 2nd Ave between 68th and 86th Streets. There must be 100 bars, all packed with partiers on NYE.

and I've been thrown out of every one...

a colorful cloth handkerchief, and a big handful of change. The hanky is for your nose, the change is for coffee. ;)

roll em up.

or maybe you "have" a "leg injury" and you "need" a stout walking cane.

a whistle is might effective at attracting attention......meybe you get approached by scumbag lowlifes....start blasting and you will have ALL of the crowds attention on you and the THUGS.......

:)

A whistle ... ha ha ha ha ha ... the crowd's attention ... cheering on the thugs.
Anyway, jammed in that tight, you get stabbed from a half-inch away.

Depends.

Standing for 7 or 8 hours in a pen/crowd, you might get the urge to go.

Which reminds me, wear some shoes that you don't mind someone peeing on. :p:D

I second those saying to make other plans.

I did the Times Square on NYE thing once, back in the mid 1990's. We were packed shoulder to should with people, most of them drunk, drinking, or pissing (or some combination thereof). At 12:00, everyone started screaming and throwing confetti and stuff. By 12:15, the streets were literally empty. I couldn't believe how quickly it emptied out (not sure if that's normal or just because it was a very cold day). Major let down.

Sounds like a disaster waitin to happen. I see your desire though, as Ive always wanted to go myself. So, no knives? dang, thats rough. Is there any resturants with a view of times square you can make reservations for and enjoy a meal etc while watching? Probably near impossable to make reservations now though......

I dont think a weapon in that size crowd is a good idea. That size of crowd will panic and stampede if anything bad were to pop off. I think thebest thing is to fake a hurt leg and pack a stout cane. It would be invaluable to apply leverage if needed, or to keep from getting sepreated from the wifey. a neck wallet also. That way you have all your IDs cards and cash around your neck, and deter bein pickpocketed. A bandanna, or Shemagh to dry off the spilled beer or worse. And of course, handwarmers, gloves, scarf and hat to keep from gettin hypothermic.

Hope this helps, and good luck bro!

go for it! I think it would be fun to do once. I'd take some medicine, bandana, ear plugs, very comfortable shoes, keychain light, and a blunt object, like a sharkie or even a g10 knife

Have fun!

Also an interesting idea, do a search for NYC New Year's Eve and find lots of links to what else is going on.

naked, I just looked up a couple of figures. Oregon's population is about 3,500,000. Here's what I found about Times Square on New Year's:

As the ball drops from One Times Square beginning at 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve, there are normally more than one million people in Times Square,

Fun. :(

simple; stay home and watch it on t.v.

+1:thumbup:

That's what I do every year.I only live about 13 miles from NYC.I've never went to Times Square on NYE & never will.

It sounds like you are set on going though,so here are a couple of suggestions.

1.A roll of quarters in your pocket.
2.A good, stout flashlight(preferably the ones with the ridges around the lens).
3.Maybe some(weighted)leather gloves

Be sure to carry a bottle large enough to hold your bladder contents, because you will not find a restroom to use the entire time.

Don't forget to keep your wallet or any other valuables in your front pockets.NOT your back pockets.

Have fun...I guess?
