PSK for NYC Times Square on New Years Eve ....

I found a TGIFriday's within viewing distance of the ball and may try to duck in there & secure reservations. I called and they said they won't take any reservations until Dec 31st.

Sharkie ? is it anything different than a fat sharpie? or is there something else I am missing?

I've always wanted to go into that TGIFriday's but i never get the chance
apparently the Sharkie is made from a glass filled nylon like Zytel or FRN, so it wil be stronger than a regular fat sharpie. I'm not so sure how useful it would be. The other idea is to get one of those Benchmade or Tuffwriter tactical pens. They're aluminum and have a dull pointed tip which could come in handy. If hassled, say it's a stylus for your PDA

PSK? Really? Is this a serious question?

Survival is about making smart choices ahead of time and the smartest choice here is not to be herded like cattle with a million other people. Have you already forgotten about that poor Wal-Mart employee who was trampled on black Friday when they didn't open the store on time? That was done by "sober" people looking for the best deal at Walmart. If anything happens in that Time's Square size crowd that is a true "survival" situation (IED, active shooters, etc), you just better hope you are one of the lucky ones that doesn't get trampled to death.

As for getting to and from the event, carry what you normally would in the city (cellphone, low-profile self-defense device, etc). But once you are actually there with a million other people... Well, your fate is really just left up to chance and human nature at that point.

I hope that doesn't sound too ominous, but the fact is that you are giving up any aspect of control attending something like that. At an event like that, a PSK of any sort would just be an illusion of control. You could have a gas mask and an AR with chest mounted mag pouches... the crowd would still drag you down if they wanted that stuff more than you.

Wow, I just read back over what I wrote. I'm really dark. I'm going to go see about getting a Paxil perscription (social anxiety drug). :D

Seriously, take everyone's advice and just go somewhere else in the city and actually enjoy yourself.

A bottle to piss in, cause you will be stuck where ever you stand! LOL. You can end up with a "urinating in public" summons though. I've lived in NYC most of my life. Never had the desire to stand in the freezing cold for hours to watch a ball drop... But enjoy it when you go. To each their own...

As a lifelong resident of NYC, I went down to Times Square one New Years. What I saw on the way into the Square worried me. What I saw when I was in the middle of it convinced me to get out.

This was before barricades, before 911 so I was armed. I saw the Guardian Angels a few feet from me as they took down and beat a purse snatcher, and the police a few feet on my other side laughed and turned away.

Not safe, not a good place to be, and now it's overcontrolled but too many people are ... unreliable. There are so many great places to go in the City, dining, dancing ... freezing is not high on my list.

The first rule of self defense is: don't go there.

My feelings exactly!!! Watch it on TV... or go to dinner somewhere... or a bar and watch it there while drinking your favorite drink! :D

1.A roll of quarters in your pocket.

Are you serious??? You'd probably have a better chance explaining a pocket knife that a roll of quarters in New York? The only reason anyone walks around with a roll of quarters is for a nice fist load. LOL

Ok, can't resist...and I'm joking but it's New York...don't you go down a day before and tape a couple of revolvers in a sewer grate to pick up after being searched. Naa, never work, NYPD has to have figured that out years ago.

How about as a last resort splurge, hire a few professional weapon legal body guards as escorts and get the "star" treatment.....

Go.
Have fun.
Dress warm.
Don't get arrested carrying some metal detection avoiding weapon.
If your stayin on 8th you should be fine walking to and from the event.

Standard rules apply, don't flash your cash. Don't look lost.
Don't wear your camera around your neck while walking around.
Do keep your head on a swivel and be aware.

Forget TGIF, my nephew from the mid-west said that it was just like the ones at home but $15-20 more expensive.
Go up 7th ave to PJ Carney's Pub @ 57st.
Tons of good place to party in Manhattan :)

Please remember, be kind to the native New Yorkers and don't stop short when walking. We don't mean to slam into you, it's just that we've got places to go and people to see.

Oh, and this native Noo Yawker has never gone to the NYE in the square.
I have always stayed local (or in) on Amateur Night.
:D

Can't fool us, you guys are always looking up at the tall buildings...in case a safe or something comes hurtling down! That is why you bump into out-of-towner's. :)

simple; stay home and watch it on t.v.
As someone who has lived in NYC for over a decade, I would like to second this.

Times Sq. on New Year's eve is crowded, filthy, loud, obnoxious, not fun, and cold.

With the current "anti-terrorist" people pig-pens, it becomes the equivalent of a mega chicken-farm... with one million people standing nearly on top of one another, in a pile of their own urine, broken bottles, and miscellaneous garbage... and after 6pm you're confined to the pens, unable to leave, even if you want to (actually, I think that might be 3pm nowadays). If you piss off the wrong drunk crowd, you can be beaten senseless without anybody noticing, and certainly nobody would hear your calls for help among the noise.

Please don't bring any weapons if you're going to go, because the thousands of cops that are stuck with trying to control this mess on New Year's eve, are going to be frustrated and cold. If they have someone whom they can arrest, they can leave that place and go to the warmth and comfort of their precinct.

If you must go, take lots water (in 500ml bottles that you can use for pee if necessary, later), lots of high-density food... and if you must carry something, carry a leatherman.

Also, don't carry a wallet - stuff your money and cell phone into one inside pocket, and credit cards, ID(!), and metrocard into another inside pocket. This kind of crowd, is a pickpocket's wet dream.

As a native New Yorker,
Bottles?
Garbage?
Pickpockets?

The city is cleaner than it has been in years.
Bottles and packs aren't allowed in the 'pens'
And what pick pocket is going to 'work' in a pen that he can't get out of?
Beaten senseless without anybody noticing?

Did you live on Staten Island?
:P
:D

Common sense will take you a long way.

I sometimes feel New Yawk City gets a bad rap unnecessarily !

Sharkies also have a screw-on cap so it won't pop off if you actually had to use it. I have used one at a concert before. It was allowed through security, and I was on the floor (small venue=no seats) pretty close to the front. A huge drunk guy behind me thought he was going to plow his way to the front when there literally wasn't any room so rather than be crushed I whipped out the Sharkie and braced it behind me so the more he pressed into me the more it went into his ribs. Even through his stupor he got the idea real fast.

Thanks for the responses - I am without power and not able to get to the Internet much these days. HUGE ice storm took out over 100,000 of us for the last 2 days.

I heard on the radio that it may be up to 6 days before we get power again.
This is a great time for me & the wife (well for me at least)

We are all bundled up and eating from our mini-camp stove. Glad I had the 10 gallons of water & canned food - for reasons like this, since our main line is frozen.
I am gonna try and get her to eat some MREs later today! I am on my cell phone's connection now so I am gonna get off of this thing so I don't kill the battery.

Thanks for all the advice - I plan on executing some common sense and staying safe. Yeah we are tourists - Yeah it is not the best place to go - But it will be worth it to say 'I did it'.

If I let fear stop me from doing all the things that don't make sense I would not be me.

I will post some pictures of the madness when we get back.

You are probably at greater risk where you are now than you will be in The Square with the 999,998 other tourists.

:D

Just got back from NYC - Time Square was freakin great!
The security was not even close to what is reported online.

I went in with my fully serrated Endura 4 and felt safe the entire time.

Nothing as far as "people pens" or metal detectors.

Anyways - we had a great time - NYC is safe - I have been all around the world and NYC is nothing compared to the horror stories I had heard.

So far the most dangerous places I have ever been: the dock area @ Montego Bay, Jamaica (anytime) or any alley in Sao Paulo, Brazil after 9 pm.

Thanks for all your advice - I guess I blew this whole security thing out of proportion.
(not mentioning the false sense of security a knife gives me in crowds of a million)

I still felt better knowing I had a last ditch advantage.

Happy New year bud .... I LOVE NY !!!!!

It was friggen freezing though - glad you enjoyed it.

i was at the garden... did anyone lose cell (text) service for like 2 hours cause of how many people were packed in a 10 block radius

I looked for you on TV but didn't see you.
Come back and visit again :D
