PSK for NYC Times Square on New Years Eve ....

I tried. It made no sense. Remember, I lived around there, walked through the area during the busiest hours. The New Year's I went but backed out of the crowd, I found a number of places to stop in, get a bite to eat (warm up!) and head on out to actually DO something that night, rather than stand around in the cold with a million other people.

No matter what they say about closing off the streets, there's always a vantage point to see from without getting trapped. I went to the last big Simon and Garfunkel concert in Central Park. The Great Lawn was set up like Times Square, with the stage at the south end and the police barriers locking in the crowd on the lawn (but everyone was sitting on the grass on a warm night). At the north end was a smaller field, no barriers, police wandering around on break or watching the crowd. And a very few of us locals leaning up against a tree relaxing, and hearing the concert better than people caught in the roar of the crowd.

I would carry this....but since I dont like People you would not catch me anywhere near there...

being a commissioned state police officer is nice sometimes...sometimes

I really hope the police wouldn't steal the money from your pocket on New Years :(.

tuck the hanky in your shirt pocket and let the change jingle in your pockets. Its bus fare, its subway fare, its for the homeless ;)

anything metal will set off the Wands, but change is'nt illegal.

Been there done that... It is kind of crazy and god forbid you have to use a bathroom while your out there.

There are alot more rules now I guess, cause I had a back pack on. Then again that was almost 10 years ago.

Watch it on TV from the Hotel room in NY

I say listen to TTD or go to a bar. There are thousands of places thet have New Years parties that you pay 1 flat fee for open bar and food. Thats what I did up until my daughter was born. Now we alternate between parties at my house and my cousin's place. This year is my turn. Any WSS people in the area are more than welcome to come by:thumbup:

regarding the bandanas

great idea with the coins,,,just please make sure the color of the bandana is black ,,no RED,YELLOW,or BLUE,,gang colors,,,a small light ,like a SF e2d , or a fenix ,,maybe even a SAK on your key chain ,,like a super tinker sized,,,thats what i carry in NYC and the cops never hassle me,,

true, and good call on avoiding gang colors...... still, I'd side with staying away all together.

Don't forget a decent pocket flashlight. Should there be a blackout for any reason, a flashlight can come in very handy. NYers learned that the hard way in 2003 in the subways.

Personally, I'd head down to lower Manhattan early and stay late.

I completely agree. If you head to the Village (Greenwich Village, East Village, NoHo area) you can find pretty much any type of fun you might want to have. Get in early before the bars and restaurants fill up. Everyone that I know who's gone to Times Square on NYE has gotten something stolen.

If you insist on going to Times Square, go there around dinner time the night before NYE. If you can handle that much of a crowd, imagine it a 1000 times worse. If you can handle that, more power to you. Someone mentioned finding a restaurant in or near Times Square - don't bother - these have been booked for months.

Sorry for the doom and gloom, but there's plenty of awesome stuff to do in NYC on NYE, and most of it doesn't involve Times Square. get yourself Zagats restaurant and nightlife guides. You can have an experience on par with dining on caviar with the Romanoffs to hanging out it punk and industrial clubs, and anything in-between.

Ha Ha Ha!
I love all of the responses ... even the ones warning me NOT to go.

But yes - I am gonna go - it is on my list of things to do ever since I can remember.

I like the small flashlight, & bandanna ideas.

I also really like the wounded leg idea with a cane.

I guess I just am not sure what to expect - that many people in one place any other time seems like a terrible idea ... But if I want to make this happen I doubt I can talk all of the millions to just let me & the wife have some privacy!

So I am moving forward, we are staying about 4 blocks away on 8th so we should be good to get a decent spot.

I found a TGIFriday's within viewing distance of the ball and may try to duck in there & secure reservations. I called and they said they won't take any reservations until Dec 31st.

Sharkie ? is it anything different than a fat sharpie? or is there something else I am missing?

I am for going with a neck wallet tucked inside a tucked in shirt.

Normally I would not be paranoid - I am not the kind of guy people go looking for when they are taking applications for crime victims. But just doing a little thinking out loud just to make sure I prepare myself for most of the things that may occur.

Thanks for all your suggestions....I will have to start a list of must haves for this little outing.

Kinda funny - I can plan for everything for a jungle month in Thailand but this single night in NYC is going to be much more complicated!

Well ... since its on your bucket list .... bundle up and definitely plan on getting there early and since you can't have a backpack with ya make sure you wear a jacket / coat with plenty of pockets for snacks might also wanna try some hand warmers. Be prepared to be "locked in" for hours once you do find a spot. I've done it once in my life and since I'm a drinker :D I had a small "bottle of water" on me filled with grey goose and sprite :D

Also just be aware of your surroundings ... that many people in one place all liquored up can be a recipe for disaster.

Best Holiday Wishes to Everyone !

Flashlight may get wanded as well, so I'd avoid one with a strike bezel. Sharpie marker, flashlight, and cell phone all sound like winners. Besides, in that crush of people, the odds of you being able to throw a punch or swing a cane are probably pretty slim.

TBH though, I personally would avoid the place. I understand what you mean about the wife though. Mine thinks totally different from me and would love to be there too!

Wear shoes you don't mind getting stepped on, pissed on, and maybe even puked on.

Perhaps bring an empty plastic water bottle to relieve yourself if needed.

I grew up in NYC and I've never spent New Years Eve...otherwise known as "amatuer night" at Times Square. A friend of mine did and got shot in the neck right after the ball dropped on his way to 34th St. There were no words exchanged just a passing glance was all it took. Some thugs opened fire on him and some other friends he was with. One of them died and he almost died after several days on life support. Not trying to scare you, but when the crowds disperse get to a nicer part of the city either uptown in the 50's or 60's or down to the village. Avoid Penn Station, lot's of shifty characters hang around there. On the upside there are more cops in Time Square than anywhere else in the city, so I don't think you have much to worry about.

all of the suggestions here sound on par with what i would suggest...but i will add to lanyard anything you can to yourself!

that's what i do for the occasional concert i attend. i like to carry a small LED flashlight in my front right pocket (where my knife normally resides) lanyarded to my belt or a belt loop with some 550 cord. i usually take my BRKT micro canadian in a kydex sheath in my back right pocket lanyarded to my belt or belt loop also. take a few bucks in my pocket, leave the rest in the car...

if you are going to be wanded i like the cane idea, sounds pretty good!

A small single shot 22 pistol. put a baby bottle nipple on the end of the barrel. This way, the last thing you taste will not be oily metal. :D
