Psychology of Black Friday sales

Hmm....Knifecenter has all spyderdo on sale. I just saved nearly $40 on a sharpmaker and stretch 2 xl that have been on my "to buy" list for a while. Knifecenter threw in one of those worksharp pocket bit tools which is actually a really useful thing (I already have one).

So, I guess to some of you money bags out there, $40 is nothing, but to me it was a good deal and worth taking the 5 minutes to read my promotions inbox, hit add to cart, and checkout. Psychology my ass 😁 :D:)

KC has some really great deals right now, especially on ZTs. They knocked like $40-$80 off their models. $280 for a 0308BLKTS and like $230 for a 0462. Man I was tempted, but I wanted to get an Eklipse scale while they’re still in stock

You're a sucker if you think that! lol

Seriously, the whole first page of this thread is full of comments like this:

The "good" knives they don't have to use "tricks"
There are however, deals on many working knives available to the savvy accumulator

If I see Black Friday in the header, it goes right into the trash.

If they want you to buy it, maybe it's not such a great deal.
Top brands never goes on sale.

No such thing as a black Friday deal on quality kit.
No manufacturer would ever discount their stuff to the point where they take a loss

I saved 22% on a high quality Spyderco knife that I had my eye on since it was announced. Is that not a deal? Is Spyderco not good kit? Did I have to do anything other than pay the slightest bit of attention?

Buying just to buy and waiting in line at 3am is one thing, but if you keep an eye out for stuff you want, there are absolutely deals to be had today and Monday. Or maybe some people just don't like saving money....

I know you were joking, but to the others… I honestly don’t think we will ever see prices lower than this (for the ZTs anyway).
Not with inflation. Only time might be if they become discontinued in the future, or if you buy one second-hand.
Seriously, $265 for a 0308. For how much knife you get for that, it’s crazy, it comes out Cheaper than the last 0303 I bought, which was $272. 4 years ago!
Thing about buying from one of the big dealers is that if there are any defects, or if you just change your mind you can simply return it, no questions asked.

$70 Delicas and $76 Enduras is like 10 years ago pricing for Spyderco. But black friday deals are fake and spyderco isn't good kit 😂 :)

Typical sales tactics. This week, I have seen quite a few posts across many different forums regarding this subject.

It's annoying, but for modern EDC knives, I really do try and wait for the Black Friday sales. Kizer usually comes in lowest on these days. and the Spyderco prices this year are great.
If you have been looking for a knife, it gets you to make a decision. It is a marketing tactic, but it doesn't mean that it isn't a good deal.

The "pre-black friday" sales, and Cyber Monday sales are another issue. I expect a bunch of stuff to go on sale for Cyber Monday after we have all indulged in black friday.

The key to getting a deal on Black Friday is this, I will only buy items if I know what the price was before the sale, like most of year.
And that is easy with brands that have MAP like price policies, Spyderco for example has the same prices across all dealers for most of the year.

Care to elaborate?

Take a breath there guy, while it may be a good deal for you, they are still making a profit on the black Friday deal.
doesn't make sense to sell a knife for less than it cost to make it. So that's what I meant

Take a breath? Take a look at the logic you just laid out there captain obvious. I would hope they are still making a profit selling at 25% off, otherwise they are stupid. Smart businesses make a profit on everything they sell all the time. Or do you only consider it a good deal if you get over on a maker and they take a loss? You get deals like that often? Do share how....

And yea, 25% off an item that never goes on sale unless it gets discounted is objectively a far better deal than full MAP. Or do you not consider Spyderco good kit?

You did say this, no?

If all parties concerned benefit, then why not

But then you paid tax, so it was probably much less than $40 in savings 🤣

Why not both? You can absolutely save money, waste money, and be "tricked" today.
I never look at MSRP, I look at "Is it sold for $180 + tax all day? Is it now $30 (or whatever) cheaper?"

Optics Planet has legit sales on holidays all the time. It's usually a 10% - 15% code for a day or two. Seems to be applicable to whatever's in your cart, all the big names too. I've waited many times for a holiday to pick something up for a few bucks cheaper from them.

I've had mixed results with them. They do a ton of drop shipping so they don't actually have a lot of stuff in stock even though they say they do on the website. They'll then play the "it will ship soon" game after they have your money. Then again, I did get an outrageous deal once, but I confirmed they physically had the item before I gave them my payment information.

Interesting. I've been fortunate enough to never experience that.
