Psychology of Black Friday sales

How about the "tactics" you are talking about? Personally, I'm fine with the "tactic" of a knife dealer emailing me to say a bunch of high quality kit I have had my eye on is going to be 25% off. Those no good bastards, how dare they! 😁
The tactics of quoting higher MSRP pricing for a greater discount percentage appearance during Black Friday sales. Not sure why you are playing hard headed about the OP’s post. It was pretty clear. It is complained about regularly on all sorts of forums across the internet. Can’t be any clearer than that.

Okay, but hear me out. Let's say a company like spyderco keeps their prices high all year, infact raising prices every year to account for production costs going up, and only discounts prices during a one time yearly sale. Prices otherwise never go lower and only increase. Is that artificially high? Or just the price and the once a year sale is just that, a once a year sale. Otherwise, on knives you want, you can buy anytime at the higher regular price. If prices are always "artificially high" do you ever buy the stuff you want? Do you just go without or maybe you only buy cheap shit all the time? Or are you a money bags and don't care about paying the higher prices. No judgment here, just wondering about the anti-saving money mind set.

All spyderco went on sale.
A buddy of mine actually just attended a sidewalk/blem sale about a week ago down in CO. He lives in Fort Collins. He came away with about ten knives. One dagger and a bunch of folders. I think he said most of them were in the $20-$60 range.

Those sidewalk sales are famous! That's a lucky friend.

Seems like only Chinese knives go on sale. It’s indicative of the enormous margins in them. I haven’t seen any of my favorite Italian imports go on sale, nor any Swedish axes. Them’s the prices and you take it or leave it.
The sale prices I've seen are all over the place, but like some have mentioned, it's a good time to be shopping for Spyderco knives.

As far as knives of Chinese origin go, there were a lot of those on sale, but it depends on where you shop. Two of the big three regional knife sellers I mainly deal with have a ton of knives on sale from the Americas and Europe, including axes. One of them is mostly focused on fixed blades and axes, so they have barely any folders and none of the ones they have are made in China. They even had an Agdor Arvika (Swedish) competition axe for sale!

At the bigger regional knife store I deal with the big sales this weekend feature a ton of Benchmade, Fox Italy, Lion Steel, Boker, Ka-Bar, Cold Steel, Condor, and TOPS. I came perilously close to buying a Ka-Bar Kephart that was $60 off, but I only had enough set aside in my budget for one pricey knife this weekend. It really makes me wish that I'd set aside more in my budget for this weekend and spent less on useless things like food... ;)

Dude, all I said was the same issue is complained about across several message boards. I didn’t say I complained about it. Just an observation. I do buy a lot of things I don’t need and I try to get the best price I can at that time. I don’t worry about it after the fact.

I usually don't flip over sales but if I happen to spot something I really like for an unusually low price which does happen from time to time I might jump on it.

O sale on an antique brass Daguerreotype lens for my antique view camera . . .no joy there.

Looking for a real bargain on a classic pocket watch for a grandson . . . .no luck on that either.

Don't need a TV that covers several square yards of wall or a thing I yell at and it buys stuff or plays music.

I was quite happy to be taken advantage of by saving $23 on this. Knifecenter even had it to me by Monday with free shipping and a free worksharp tool thingy. Darn them! šŸ˜‚

Very nice!
Funny how Spyderco single handedly made this whole thread kind of moot.

There are bargains to be found, finding them and deciding if they are really a good bargain is the challenge, and the fun of the search.

Who needs an excuse like a Black Friday Sale; to buy a knife?
Sshoot: I'll even buy on a Mauve Tuesday night...

Two items I purchased with this years sales were immediately out of stock after I purchased.
Thinking many of the sale items are freeing up old stock.
Both items were $100 CAD off regular day to day prices everywhere else.
(Benchmade 490 and 15200)

My rule on Black Friday is that I don't buy anything I wasn't going to buy anyway. For several years I'd buy a $500 Target gift card for 10% off... Because I was going to buy groceries there every week anyway.

This year the only Black Friday purchase was a gun I'd wanted for a long time with a 15% discount code. I'd never seen the maker offer a discount in the two years I'd been wanting one, and $300 off was $300 off.

You got scammed! lol  😁

If my preferred dealer offers a Delica regularly for $81, and I can get it there on sale for $61, I'm getting it. That Spyderco thinks highly of their knife pricing is irrelevant.

I purchased an endela k390 $40 off of online ā€œstreet priceā€. Am quite happy with that.

Was shopping them anyway and it seemed like a good excuse to buy another knife to add to the accumulation.
