Pulling the trigger on a an order, kinda having regrets...

Just a hobby I really got into when my mother was near the end of her life. It helped me in doing something that would get me zoned out from that difficult situation. With her now gone, the hobby continues, maybe now winding down with it a bit. So no, I get my joy from admiring and collecting these knives, not using them. I have mentioned before, my one little Buck Metro keychain knife (having a 1 inch blade), gets all I need done as my edc.... the others are just a hobby I have enjoyed getting into :-)

Wouldn't allow myself to criticize in any way, but a 1" blade only for daily use ???? Can't help but saying you're probably missing a good part of the pleasure... Start with a Peanut and give it a go as your EDC : peel your fruit, checker the hot dogs, open your letters, halve the buns and slice the cheddar for the hamburgers, trust me : you will be delighted. Soon you'll be grabbing that Utica drop point hunter to hack up a chicken or a load of carrots. It begs for it ! You can still clean it and put it back in the display afterwards : it will look as new, I believe.

It may seem odd to some that my 1" Buck Merto has performed all tasks for me. It is my edc... I guess everyone can measure their needs best... My blade measuring only one inch (my Metro), it has been just great. My recently having started this knife collecting hobby, (mostly of pocket knives, with a sprinkle of fixed blades), and having spent about $2500 on buying them, you may find it strange that I have my edc needs met with a knife as small as my metro. The Buck Metro was gifted to me by a very good friend, and likely cost him under 20 bucks. Well, it works for me... and since me is who owns them, me thinks I knows best how they will serve me ;-)

Of course, everyone's needs (and wants) are different. You know what you want and need from this hobby. I respect that.
So I hope you take all the ribbing you'll get in a friendly spirit:
"C'mon, Jimmy. Use your pretty knives! Buy one nice peanut for using and you will see. You know you wanna!"

Oh I see. Thanks for the explanation Jimmy, as long as you get enjoyment out of it then it doesn't really matter how.

Everyone has their preferences. I EDC a much larger folder. A 1" blade wouldn't do it for me due to strength issues other than for opening letters or an occasional box. I have a smaller Vic on a key chain and it gets a surprising amount of use.

$2500... done that. After a while you may want to question your choices and go for fewer but higher grade knives. Pretty much what I did.

Thanks :-)

I was wondering in which display case to put it in.... and after a little moving around in this display, she was placed here. Though my recent purchases include the fixed bladed Queen shown in this display, this Utica is nicer overall. Yup, really am happy with this Utica fixed blade knife :-)

PKJ, I'm really happy that your Utica arrived and that you are happy with it. It looks like it has found a good home in one of your displays.

How does she do it?!... How is that tiny knife able to handle a man's daily needs?!... Shazaam... she just does :-) Guess what knife I use to open up a new incoming USPS priority mail box containing a new knife? What knife is with me when I am out and about? Which knife has not only not let me down, but has not met a task it can't handle? It's this little thing :-) Kind'a being my little gentlemen's knife. Nope, just have not needed anything else as a edc. Again, one must measure ones own needs and or wants :-)

My collection could drift to higher end.. or even custom.

BUT, I do like buying from the historic names the most. They made knives back in the day for the masses... common man knives.... and that is what I find cool. Will I ever add a $500 custom?.. Likely not. I would rather get 6 or 7 good quality Case, GEC, Queen knives... more common... more realistic, more cool, in MY eyes :-)

They say giving is better than receiving.... So, I suggest you go out there and buy me a new Peanut... send it my way (out'a the goodness of your very kind heart). BUT, don't get too mad at me when you see it pictured in one of my displays! LOL! ;-)

I have a number of customs. But honestly, I have moved back to higher grade factory knives for the most part.

Like your little key chain blade, I carry a larger SAK and it does just about everything I need to do with a knife.

Jimmy, is the barlow the Remington Big Daddy? I bought one of those. But it was too big to carry comfortably for me. Plus I believe it was made by Bear & Sons which turns me off now a bit.

Hey Jimmy!! How about enabling your e-mail contact in the settings section or maybe even buy a gold or silver membership so we can message you with deals, dealers, etc. that we can't put in an open post on the forum? It's just that I think quite a few people want to pass info on to you that just can't be done in the open forum. Just asking.

I will admit that I prefer natural materials... and that I do not care for delrin. BUT, it was the main reason I purchased this Camilus made large Remington branded barlow. Since I did not have any delrin in my collection, I figured, well... here is a way to get something to represent it in my collection. Also, it added these firsts to my collection:
First barlow (though I've had others in my youth days)
First Remington branded knife
First Camillus contracted knife

So, I decided to pick it up :-) It's delrin handle looks so, well, mickey mouse like, with the red and yellow colors, but, oh well. Not sure if any other delrin ends up in my hands.... would have to be pretty nice, since I just like real natural materials. Even if it looks real, if it ain't, I'll know it, and it kind'a turns me off. But then again, I must be weird, because I do not care for stag either. Guess it all has to be taken in on a case by case basis.... because one never knows what may catch ones fancy :-)

Ok Jimmy. Like I said; I was just askin - not meaning it to be negative.

I was digging around in my knife "tub" and found another Remington Big Daddy barlow. Didn't even remember buying two. Found two or three Schrade USA's, a Camillus trapper with jigged bone scales, a 1993 Remington Bullet knife, and some Case knives. Even found my second Case that I got when I was a kid which I carried hunting many many times. I was actually looking for some customs and that I have misplaced. Must be stashed somewhere else.

The one that caught my attention was a Schrade made for Colt. That was a cool find.

The Utica slipjoints I've seen first hand have been of serviceable F&F, in general I'd say the quality is better than Bear, but not quite to the same level as a Case, fine knives by all means. That fixed blade looks like it's a real nice knife. I like it, I'd like to see how a patina would form on it.

So I hope you take all the ribbing you'll get in a friendly spirit:

Incorrect.

Paul

Correct.

There's no one right way to enjoy pocket knives

I suppose I have to say this because we have a lot of newish posters:
  • Ribbing is frowned on in Traditional.
  • Posters in Traditional are expected to maintain a positive, friendly environment. Teasing is not a positive, friendly thing.
  • Across all of BF except Whine and Cheese, posts about disagreements are expected to be worded respectfully on the part of both parties. We don't have to all agree on every opinion. We do have to respect the opinions of others.
