Purple! Because Ice cream has no bones!

Off topic, was wondering about good WW1 films, maybe not so much gore, but a good story. I mentioned All Quiet on The Western Front (with John boy actor), and I liked 1917. Saw War Horse, etc. any love stories? My daughter was asking for a movie, not sure just for historical context or for a book she was reading, she likes historical fiction too, so do I. I also like Civil War, did they ever make a movie from Across 5 Aprils? Red Badge of Courage? Sorry, I have wandered off again.
The Lost Battalion was a pretty good mostly fact based movie, has a great story line of what happened right before the end of the war. The other I like is "They Shall Not Grow Old" which is more of a documentary with actual footage. I don't recall either them showing a lot of gore, but it does depict the horrors of war. My 2 cents.

Not really a movie but I just watched a documentary on WW 1 recently. It was called WW1 By The Numbers. Really good.

I remember the WW1 Apocalpse series about the war. I’ll have to check that one out Dave. I always got a big kick about my grandmother who was born in 1903, she was a teenager when she remembers the troops coming home on the train in the little PA town she lived in, so maybe 1919. When we visited her when I was a little boy in the 70s, her next door neighbor was a WW1 veteran, i went to visit him and we saw some of his old stuff in the basement, I wish I had paid better attention then as i had a short attention span as a lad.

My grandfather was a WW1 vet. He was in the calvary prior to WW1 and was with Pershing chasing Pancho Villa around Mexico in 1916. As a Sgt he was attached to Pershing's staff. He rode the General's horses for him to keep them tuned up when the General wasn't on them. Thats how he snagged my grandmother. Saw a hot chick walking in the park and started putting the horse through its paces to impress the girl. It worked.

Almost a spring day yesterday, a lull between storms. Went out to the ranch to cut up some firewood. Lots of deadfall around. Went up to an area we call The Bowl and then into The Upper Bowl. 4x4 only to get into The Upper Bowl due to the steepness of the climb. Kicking out salt blocks in The Bowl on our way and saw these two lil guys. New calves maybe 3 weeks old:

Here in the Upper Bowl looking back towards the south and the Tehachapi Mountain range across the Tehachapi Valley:

Most north facing slopes still had a lil snow on them:

Heading home with 3 truckloads of wood, all oak. Looking south to the Tehachapis again and Hwy 58. Is that Mack Mack going by?

EkIrEUP.jpg

By our main gate is Tehachapi Hospital. Betcha its the only hospital in California surrounded on three sides by cattle ranches. The Loop ranch to the west and us to the north and east.

Went on home and Steve brought his splitter over. We got all three truckloads split. It went from a kinda spring day to bitter cold and windy as we were getting that done.

That's nice country Dave, but are you sure that's a hospital and not a prison? 😁

You'll know Mack Mack 's truck when you see it.

Must of been the one! Ya look close ya can see it in the pic!

They might be imprisoned by grasslands! Kinda a funny story. When the hospital first opened we knew a gal that was working there. She said the president of the hospital kicked out whoever had the corner office on the east side (facing us) and said this is my office ya can have my old one. He likes to look out and see the cattle grazing. At the time we had about 6 old retired horses out there and they'd often be visilbe out there grazing too. Kinda a zen thing I guess.

Tehachapi does have a prison, the major employer in town. But that ain't it. Its way out in Cummings Valley.

I'll take a view of cows grazing all day long.

Had 30 antelope down the road this morning and the dozen deer that make their way behind our place each morning.

12 below, nice and frosty. Had a Sun Dog come up with the sunrise, don't know what makes them but they're always neat to see.

Noticed some Cowbell posts around the forum. Thanks for spreading the word!

Frosty here too this morning but not that cold, 27 or so. So frosty it looked like it had snowed. Suppose to snow later. I keep telling folks no bikinis and palm trees in this part of California!

No kidding, I can remember freezing my arse off during some cold February nights at Ft. Irwin, not terribly far from you there.

We've been in the 30's and 40's pretty much all January. A little cold snap and it looks like it warms up again in a couple of days. I'm guilty of enjoying below zero weather though, there's something peaceful about it.

Yep it can get cold out Barstow way. Yeah not too far, hour and a half from here to Barstow and then another 30 mins from the Barstow to Ft Irwin. Been out there once. I've seen ten below here but its been some time. So we had 2.15" of wintery mix the last 24 hours, started bout 1500 yesterday. The ranch above the neighbor's house:

The Tehachapis:

Both pics shot from the front courtyard of the house. Phone says its 31 degrees but feels like 23. Lil contrast to those almost spring like pics above.

I did drive by Friday morning. Today I considered it but the wind was howling in SoCal and I thought it not a great idea.
Thanks for sharing, Dave. Every time I pass by I still dream of riding those hills and try to see it through your eyes. Things just look better from the hurricane deck of a horse.

Someone in Montucky shoulda shot that balloon down.

Friday was an amazing day driving past your place, Dave. Mackeral skies and mares tails.
Of course the was a tractor trailer on it's side just west of you.
They look so peaceful when they lay down to rest.
