Terrill Hoffman is gracious enough to host PWYP each year. Originally, Practice What You Preach, PWYP was intended to host those willing to demonstrate what they say they can do live and off-line on his property in NC.

Well, I can't take Terrill's idea (he has been too kind to me over the years) so I will modify it and offer a challenge to those up for it in 2010. It is meant to keep us honest and help us all learn what works and what just sounds cool online.

Here is what we can do and this is as much of your event(s) as it is the next guy so feel free to buzz in. We can have a few venues where guys can hang out, swap stories, tell some tall tales, trade gear and of course "Put Up or Shut Up". Like the doomed CT gathering a couple years back, we can have a theme like fire or carving or sheltercraft or whatever. We can also have a video version(pictures alone can be deceptive) with Youtube submissions of yourself doing whatever skill is picked. No trick photography! We can even assign judges that will be picked at random to choose who has the most bragging rights.I may even be able to get some makers and manufacturers to donate prizes. I don't really plan on telling anyone to "shut up" but I know if a skill isn't feasible the participant won't try it and will bow out by default.

So, with that being said, what do you guys think? Personally, 2010 is a year for me to do more teaching and less buying/trading.I had a great 2009 but the next year will be even better. I think this will be a fun way to highlight the many talents we have here on the WS&S forum.

So, will you guys be up to "Put Up or Shut Up?"

As long as it includes drinkin' and lyin'.:p

Seriously though, yes I'd be in. Local or video. I need to prove some of it to myself as well. The skills that is. I can prove drinkin' and lyin' anytime.;)

Mmiam,

Break out the booze! Joezilla and I are always up for some Van Damage. Makes the ribbing and camraderie more fun!

Kevin that sounds like a cool thing to do. I will be doing a WNY gathering again this year hopefully in July this time and that could be a great place not only to have a bunch from here there, but to do Put up or shut up vids. Gee one never knows I may be able to do some kind of give away there as well. Doug

Im in. 2010 is gonna be a year of skills, and a year of not spending.

Sounds great.

Someone might need to help me learn the basics of posting and shooting videos. I have a camcorder, just never used it.

DP and Jake,

Thanks for jumping on board. I appreciate the giveaway offer and Jake I know you will be one to certainly "Put up". Looking forward to meeting you both and just may in 2010.

G'day Kev

So, will you guys be up to "Put Up or Shut Up?"
Since buying a digital camera in 2005, I thought this is exactly what I have been doing :D

Since learning how to have videos hosted & imbedding them in the forums I frequent, I have also included video as well as pictorial verification that I do indeed "Practice what I preach".

Whilst I won't be able to attend any events located in the US (for obvious reasons), I intend to continue to enjoy my time in the wilderness here in Australia. You can rest assured I will continue to post factual pics & vids of my time outdoors :thumbup:

Kind regards
Mick

I am in on this. It's actually quite ironic that you post this because I was thinking about this very thing for 2010. I feel as if I have amassed a large number of knives and buy gear, etc. but have left lilttle time actually learn.

I plan on 2010 being a learning year for me... for sure!!

Thanks for kicking us in the a$$ Kev! I'd love to join a gathering somewhere as well and learn from you guys that in person. I'm looking forward to a great year!

Well I was planning on attending PWYP this year, but if we can get a similar gathering going a lil closer I am all for it.

I am more than willing to help set things up Kev, so if you need a hand let me know.

The youtube vid idea stuff is great as well, but for guys wanting to learn, the gatherings is the best option. I learned my 1st figure four at the 1st CT Gathering almost 2 years ago, and haven't looked back yet:thumbup:

Jake I know you will be one to certainly "Put out". .

Fixed it for you:thumbup::D

I think its a great idea. I will put my money into learning, and hoppin on a plane to get to CT for an event, rather then buying more gear.

I think you're on safe ground Mick.

I do keep a vague index of who's done what here but it's quite woolly and ill defined. It might be fun for me to note some of what I observe down in a kind of grid. That would certainly help with the memory side of things, but it gets tough to manage and classify all the little things I'm attending to:

For example; it's easy to allocate people to boxes of “only a consumer”, “collector only”, “fanboy of”, “reenactment fetish”, “trip suitable for children”.

It gets a little harder with; “conditions clearly controlled”, “can see lollipop man”, “done on patio”, “would probably have bought that make irrespective”

And it's a killer with these; “pro-wool, anti-gortex guy” , “subsequent post – three drowned rats huddle photo” - “solution-add more wool”.

or

“prefers X steel ” - “takes photo of brown SNAFU one in jungle” - “declares change required”

or

“finds poncho way too small” - “buddies up with mate” - “vows never to be caught like that gain”

or

attention whoring “******” & “******” & “******” “fawn”, “in cooperative”, “tout”, “shill”, “read my CV, blah”

Yup, it gets too much of a pain to note down all the information I use to establish witness credibility. For the time being I think I'll stick with a fuzzy gist.

2010 I'll just be doing what i always do....going into the woods and practicing various skills.

When I see pics of PWYP I always see a lot of coolers, ATV's Coleman lanterns.

It always seemed to me that what is being practiced and what is being preached are two different things;)

Sounds good. I need a reason to learn how to post with you tube anyway

Yeah, I am interested.

How does one edit a video, easily, in Linux?

I have a camera that will take vidoe, but I don't know how to edit video, so once I do that, I should be good.

Though, I can do simple pictorials...

I have no idea how to edit videos either. So the vids I have put up are all one take wonders. Mistakes are part of life and seeing them doesn't bother me. :)

True point, but I also like to edit for proper flow, I tend to go six ways, and then I find it helpful to re-arrange things so they don't sound like the mad ramblings of half-sane.
