Put Up or Shut Up 2010

Lets do it! I only had one other forumite on the Masonboro island survival trip, and I planned that 4 months in advance!!! Lets get dirty ya'll!

I just figured out how to use the video function on my digital camera so I guess I'll post some videos on the whacky ideas I come up with, rather than (poorly) describing them.

Of course, I'll have to come clean that I fell off my diet/workout plan and have gained back some of the weight back. . . :o :(

Great idea Kev, I'm in. I won't be able to get to the gatherings but I can post a bunch of You-Tube Vids.
As for prizes, I can offer up this Garmin E-Trex model GPS. Its two years old but basically new. It was given to me as a gift but I much prefer a map and compass.

We can have a few venues where guys can hang out, swap stories, tell some tall tales, trade gear and of course "Put Up or Shut Up". Like the doomed CT gathering a couple years back, we can have a theme like fire or carving or sheltercraft or whatever. We can also have a video version(pictures alone can be deceptive) with Youtube submissions of yourself doing whatever skill is picked.

Taking pictures doing stuff, making videos, etc and posting them is really what the forum is about anyway. For this to be really cool, it seems it would be best to do it exactly like you said above.

- Pick your venue and date.
- Pick a theme for the venue.
- Let the people attending participate in person.
- Video submissions only for folks not able to attend for skills that pertain to the theme.
- Two sets of "winners." One for the "live" folks, and one for the "video" folks. Seems like it would be hard to pit those two against each other, because the live stuff could go in a direction that is based on stuff happening at the venue and would be difficult for others to compete.
- Have as many as you can in the year.

The videos would eliminate the "look a picture of a firesteel" pulls out a bic "oh look a fire" :) I am assuming that is what you meant by "trick photography." Unless you meant someone photoshopping Ray Mear's head off, and putting theirs in :D

Sounds fun!

I think you nailed it there Brian:thumbup::thumbup: However, if we make it a complete competition it may scare people off. I think the goal is to get as many people here to do the things we all love to talk about, not finding out who the best is. The reward for competing should be the camraderie, friendships you make, and skills you learn from doing these kinds of things.

+1

WSS seems much more helpful than some of the "badasses only" survival forums. I'd prefer to keep the competition low key and instead encourage participation and mastery of previously ellusive skills.

Gotcha  With all the mention of prizes, donations and such, I was thinking he meant more competition. If he does give away something, that would probably be the fairest route. But, like you said, just doing it to do it, with no prizes would also be cool.

The reason my head jumped to competition is it seems this is the stuff most of do for the forums anyway (when we have the free time :D

It will be neat either way.

That's why I'm in it  I really want my skills to grow.

It really isn't meant as a competition first. I'd be happy if I saw more people host events and show up to others. 2010 should be a year to get out more, meet others, expand skill sets, demonstrate ability (don't just write about it) and above all, have fun. So, who is going to host an event? Who is willing to take some $, put it aside and travel to meet up? Who will put up or shut up?

Better yet.....let's crash Joe's place (or at least the state he lives in) :D I bet a lot more folks would show up there :D

I agree....I dont wanna "compete" against people, I just wanna get out and "DO" more in 2010. Im putting back some dough for travel.

Plus, there is a Bushcraft skills competition here in MO in the spring if anyone is interested. I guess Rescuerielly is flyin in for it. Ill be going for sure too if anyone is interested in attending. I believe Snow is in too....

As far as prizes, I think they should be done in typical door prize fashion. Random number generator for those who attend/participate. Not "whos the best", just who "put up or shut up".... Some of the newbies could really benifit from this, and deserve a chance at a prize just as much as the seasoned woodsman with tons of experiance.

I am looking at the end of July to do the second WNY Gathering, Last year we had Paul Tsujimoto (toooj) here on the forums from Ka-bar came up and brought a nice selection of knives to sell. Hopefully we will get the other special guest to come up as well (more on that later). Last year was the first year and we did a lot of hanging out and talking. JohnG brought his primitive fishing gear and caught a couple fish with it. This year with some help I am looking in to doing more hands on not only for myself but whom ever comes. It will be open to all and it is about an hour from Buffalo and Rochester NY. There is plenty of land so that there can be a bunch of different things going at once. Here would be a good chance to come play, and we will make sure we have the video cameras rolling. Doug

A primitive skills gathering in the Spring? Cool! Go John!

A gathering in MI sounds great Brian. We are hosting one with Bark River next year already. The two could probably piggyback if you want. I'll be in MI in the Summer if you want to do an earlier gathering. Let's set it up! And Joe, what a spot. We'd be crazy not to do something there.

Prizes? We can do both random and best performance.

More thoughts?

I'll be happy to host an event here any time. I am more than willing to travel as well.

I'd love to crash Joe's place. I would also love a camp/ canoe trip in the Everglades if any one knows of a spot! If we get enough people to go to any of these I am sure we can talk to places like EDC Depot, Knives ship free, etc to toss us a few door prizes...

I vote for a Swamp were ther are bugs and we suck at life :)

I've got access to lowland swamp in South Carolina, and lodge property there for someone who wants to smooth it. All the boar you can shoot if you see 'em.

Yeah man. Although I never claimed to have any skills, so I don't feel like I have anything to prove, per se. :D
