Put Up or Shut Up 2010

I immediately thought of Michigan because I know a few areas where such an activity would be cool, and would be willing to help with the logistics.

BUT, Joe's area is so great, and there are so many things to do there. But, I wouldn't be as confident planning that one. Still, that would be my preference.

That would be really neat if we could get a deep snow trek in here pretty soon. As in, trek it into a campsite (snowshoe or ski). I will have to PM you about that and the bark river deal. I didn't know anything about that, or when it is.

Great idea K.

I'd love to get together in the MI area with some of you guys, I've had last minute stuff come up the last few times you all have gotten together (Waterloo, Peche Isle) and it pains me. Presuming my schedule co-operates I would be in for anything within 4 or 5 hours of Detroit (and further if it's the UP or northern ON). The few likeminded outdoors type friends I have have scattered across the country in the last few years, and I'm left doing stuff by myself which is kinda a bummer.

But anyway I could also help with planning if you want any help.

One spot that I've been to that was a blast was the back country campsites at Tahquamenon State Park, probably some limits to the amount of people we should have back there. I'd like to get out this spring (unless I get a better warmer bag between now and then), but even at the end of april last year there was still a good amount of snow on the ground.

If there is a North Carolina event I hope I can make it. I'm already going to PWYP and I can be in NC from Thursday - early AM on Sunday. (Work starts at noon on Sunday. Depending on where the event would be it would easily be a 3+ hour ride to work. If I know far enough ahead of time I have some vacation time left and as it stands now I won't have to take any/much for PWYP.) Yay new work schedule! Thursday, Friday, & Saturday's off. Yippee!!! No more night shift= Triple Yippee!!

Kevin are you going to be able to make it to PWYP this year? I know you've had scheduling conflicts the past two years I've been and I don't think I've seen you post about PWYP IX yet at KF.

Hey Kevin,

What about designing a "Put Up or Shut Up" patch? First, it wouldn't have to be WSS specific, so it would be relevant to other forums and we wouldn't need approval. Second, we could have smaller patches that go underneath that list individual skills accomplished. (These would only be sent out upon demonstrated mastry of a skill.) If the idea of a big patch with little ones trailing off it seems too "boy scout," maybe having a main one with simple colored "campaign ribbons" to designate the individual skills. (Red equals fire bow, Green equals axecraft, etc.) We could even create an online version that could go in a person's signature, similar to the weight tracker in my sig.

waddayathink?

As popular as patches may be. I don't want them for this ongoing skills-related challenge. I want guys to use what they have and demonstrate skills, not collect more schwag along the way. Probably the best reason is the fact I don't want to and I am sure no one wants to be responsible for handing them out.

I'm nixing the patch idea now. Sorry.

Even as I was typing that I was thinking, "Gee, that would be a lot of work!"

sad to say i wont be able to make it to any of those events, its rather difficult to get a US tourists visa, so unless u guys wanna do something here in barbados, or maybe south america, i'll just have to be content with pics and threads to read on the forums.

if your interested in something in south america, i do know the absolute perfect guide/places in Guyana, but thats kinda far for most people to go just to spend a couple weeks in the middle of the jungle with some Amerindian guides.

Darnit, you should have told me before i booked honeymoon plans!

I agree....I dont wanna "compete" against people, I just wanna get out and "DO" more in 2010. Im putting back some dough for travel.

Exactly what attracted me to this thread.... DOing MORE this year then last. I posted over in the RAT thread recently that I am making 2010 the year I stop buying new knives, new gear, new whatever, and start putting the money towards being able to get out there.

I am up for this one.

EDIT: As long as it is someplace I can drive too, NC, NY, SC all sound good so far :)

A couple updates.

Here is an idea for 2010 I thought of this morning and it stuck with me. "The best discussion forum is around a campfire."

Also, I spoke with Reid of Sharpshooter Sheath Systems and BRKT. The 2010 Camp-In (www.camp-in.com) is a possible location for a PUOSU event. He would love for guys to come out and hang out. Read the link and let me know what you think.

Kevin,
As you know Scott and I are in for Marty's in Jan. I believe most of us have taken a New Year's resolution to forgo the gear buying and it put our time back into the timber. We also have set forth to have more of a purpose to our outings. It's easy to hike in, make camp, grab chow and baton a few pieces of lumber with our "latest & greatest". Used to be the time was spent on all day treks, bushwhacking to that hidden "honey hole" or to pursue fair chase with rifle or bow.
I believe the best time is spent on those outings of old. I've pledged to use my old rucks, stuff it with the gear that works and enjoy.
Kahuana's and my canoe trip in Maine was what I need more of. Along with hanging out with you cutthroats, I also want to hit the Rockies and come full circle.
Seems to me lately when someone posts about their trip the topic of gear is brought up more then the trip itself.
I still think a trip to the BWCA is what most of us needs to blow out the gaskets and recharge.
See you in Jan...
Ed

Kevin, That site would be www.camp-in.net

Just got an OK for a large scale SC swamp location campout for the summer. The location is next to a rather large pond with plenty of fish and shooting/hunting room. I'll try to lock down one for the NC crowd too.

Kev,
Earlier today, I had an epiphany. When I was in instructor training years ago, we had to draw lecture subjects from a hat so we did not use subjects we were familiar with. Maybe you can choose skills and have a skills drawing of sorts.

You or whomever you choose be it a group, panel or forum post can conduct a survey and create a skills database. All who wish to participate will receive a skill and perform same on video if necessary (shelter building, hand drill, bow drill, figure 4 trap, piute deadfall and so on). This would give the opportunity to research a little known skill and perform it while possibly delivering a lesson if desired.

Of course, there are a lot of variables ie: geographic area (can't be expected to make a snow shelter in a desert climate etc.), but I think it could work. Forced networking of sorts to seek information from those in the know.
Just my .02,
Lt. Mike

Love it, great idea:thumbup:

You're pretty smart for a cop!
:p

Mike,

Great ideas like usual. Did you get my plan for a test of dexterity and firestarting to be done at the WLC next month? Jerry and I are all in for it and hopefully more if they show. Looks like we have 25 right now guaranteed attendees.

Are you on spearboard?

Matt

I'm new, and my bushcraft knowledge is minimal, but I've done a good deal of backpacking and camping, and would be up for some trips in the South East. I'm in SW VA.

Skogkniv is organizing a trip in the lower Adirondacks over April 17-18. Anyone going? Skog, can you post some info here?
