Puukkos

Wow, I can't believe I haven't read this thread before. It made me pull out my puukos for a picture. I have been thinking recently that the puuko is a design I can't get tired of. Although not built to exact traditional specs I threw in my Koyote knives long leuko as well.

I just finished my first puuko inspired knife for a wedding last weekend (middle one in musk ox and copper/brass/bronze etched Damascus

Thanks for all of the new pictures I have in my knives folder everybody!!

Here are some of my more traditional Puukko, together with a few other Nordic knives...

Who made the third and sisth from left? I've recognised all the others: Marttiini, Mora, Järvenpää, Eräpuu, Roselli and Strømeng.

The third reminds me of Gerd Jørgensen style, still the blade has way higher grind than norse usually has; in addition the belt loop is fixed with a metal rivet, while Jørgensen usually use antler or leather knots.

The sixth might have a Carpenter UHC blade, but I don't go any further on this.

Thought you might like some of those Jack :)

Hi Fredrick. You are correct on the makers (plus Johan Engstrom for the Barrel knife). The 'difficult' one is a blade by a Swiss maker Stefan Anken (aka. Tacol). I asked the young finnish Nylund brothers to handle and sheath it for me, in reindeer and stabilized sallow root. The blade is great....the knife is very well put together....but I wish it didn't have the beak on it :-/

That is a Rosselli UHC carpenter also, yes. This time I handled and sheathed it. In keeping with both Mr Rosselli and my own tastes, it's handled simply in stabilised Masur Birch, with copper and birch bark spacer/bolster.

Thanks Frederick.

Here a couple more...one has been waiting for pants for a VERY long time :o

Oh....and just for giggles I took a picture of some more modern versions of the classic Nordic belt knife....I'm sure you'll not struggle to guess the makers here! ;)

Very nice! I especially like the black one in the middle... Matches my motorcycle jacket. ;) Was ist das?

...although the one you've just finished, with the white spacers, is sooo classy. What blade did you use, again?

Ha ha....so manly! It's an Iisakki Järvenpääa 'Oltermanni'. The blade is a razor sharp stainless. The handle is actually stacked leather ;)

I often buy these knives to 'take a look' and see their construction and what have you.

Thanks. The blade is a Polar 95.

The dark one is this Iisakki Järvenpää. Stacked leather handle.

The blade is a Polar, made by Lauri Metally Oy in Kauhava, Finland.

[sorry for double post, scruffuk]

Just for avoiding confusion, though, remeber that puukkos are essencially finnish but not always a knife from Finland is a puukko.
Anything similar but from scandinavian counties (Denmark, Sweden, Norway) is a brukskniv or a tollekniv.

Just as example, the knife made by the Nylund brothers is way more scandinavian than finnish styled. In fact the Nylunds are of swedish roots and part of the swedish speaking minority present in Finland.

Frederick, yes of course I understand this quite well. Hence my 'Nordic' pre-cursors.

Although I respect your point, I think its really not necessary to drive the point home all the time.

Cool! Thought at first it could be wood, but stacked leather in such a dark color... Niiiiiice.
Polar 95, eh? Thanks. May have to get one of those & handle it myself. (Just finishing up handling a neat little Spanish drop point, but that's for another thread, once it's done.)

No probs. Good look with it.
Oh, that sounds interesting.
You'll have to keep me posted once its done.

Very nice P&G's !
I love the way the red spacers in the dark makes this one pop visually!

Here are a few that I have posted before, a couple in Walrus ivory and a few others.

Have a great day folks

Regards
