Puukkos

Finnish smith and wilderness guide Pasi Hurttila. The leuku-puukko couple shown by "bonusmarple" is made by him too.

No, I don't think that's the name Jack and I are trying to think of. There was a seller of high end woodworking hardware. They sold by catalog. They did not make the knives. I bought both those from that catalog.
Garrett Wade? I used to get that catalog and recall it having some knives.

Going off on a rant here...
I had such hopes for the Spyderco Puukko... The other thing that killed it for me is the $200 price.
Absolutely agree. I was gung-ho for one until I saw the retail price. That much money for a simple fixed blade? Looks like it's made from only three pieces. No moving parts, no hinges, no locks... Ugh.
And I don't like the hole either.

Sorry Silenthunterstudios, I have no Scandinavian knife photos available. I do have some dandy knives though - Mora, Helle, Marttiini, Ahti, Karesuando... You'll just have to take my word for it. At least for the time being. ;)

Leichtung. They shipped out of place here in Cleveland; I bought my Puuko over the counter there. My wife bought the folder from some other outlet locally.

I got both at their store on the east side. The "folding puukko" ended up in Ken Warner's 1976 book.

Got the small one at an antique mall in 2008 for $30.00 ("Toy Knife"). ^___^

By golly, I think it WAS Leichtung that I bought from. Found this description, which fits my memory of the catalog to a T.

Rick Leichtung ran a mail order operation that was kind of a combination Brookstone, Veritas and Harbor Freight - an eclectic mix of tools, "handys" and miscellany. Rick sold the business to...

Edited to add: found a post by somebody on some board somewhere that indicates Leichtung was operating in the late 60's. So maybe my first time estimate wasn't so far off.

I moved to Cleveland in 1973, so they were around then, Furthermore:

Get on Joonas' list Jim. His English is excellent and getting a knife from Finland is an easy thing these days with PayPal and the Internet. The wait is only a few months at the moment.

i joined the british forum earlier today just to go admire his work and then found myself scrambling around the net trying to find the euros to dollars conversion rate. LOL

ive been chatting with Joonas for a couple days now and it sounds like he can have a knife made for me in time for deer camp in december.... sweet.

Sounds great. Don't forget to post pictures when you get it.

i will. hes gonna send me some pics later so i can decide exactly what im looking for. decisions decisions LOL

Indeed, I hope to! It all depends on the USPS actually delivering it to me. It's been in customs for five full days now. How long it languishes there is anybody's guess.

You'll have a good time with it and you'll find what great combination birch bark/rhombic section is.

A question about grinds. I've seen a lot of scandi grinds, a few high saber grinds, some hollow grinds, and I believe a few flat grinds from custom makers. Scandi is the most traditional, but I have decided for the umpteenth time to stay away from scandi grinds. I know I can ask makers overseas for a hollow/flat ground puukko, but are there any out there that make one without a scandi, with the same thickness?
