Puukkos

Ok those birch bark handled puukkos by Joonas Kallioniemi are beautiful. I think I might have to save my pennies.

After more than a week sitting in US Customs, my Pasi Hurttila puukko is finally in my grubby hands. It is wonderful. The birch bark handle is nothing short of luxurious in the hand, firm but with a slight softness, almost like velvet. Craftmanship is top notch, solid and with really good heft. It will be hard to stop myself from ordering one of his Leukus too!

Here are a few quick snaps in the backyard, nothing fancy (I'm not much of a product photographer).

Congratulations. That looks to be a fine knife, wonderfully crafted.

Puukkos (this applies to all well-made knives really) have long exerted a pull on my imagination. I have trouble explaining it, so forgive me for borrowing another's words.

I own an old Finnish knife or puukko, the blade made from an old file, the handle and molded case of birch bark. I have carried it for thousands of miles and it has never failed me. The well-tempered steel is hard enough to open a tin and still sharp enough to fillet a fish without needing retouching. Not long ago I dropped it while at Listening Point, and traced and retraced my steps without avail....Since it was early November, the smell of snow was in the air, and we knew if we did not find it then, it would lie outdoors all winter.

"Let’s go back once more," Al said before dusk settled down. "We might just be lucky." Back we went.....Then, with a shout of triumph, my young friend ran over and placed the knife in my hand. Before he left, he took a picture of me standing by the cabin turning the knife over and over. Far more than a tool, the knife to me a symbol of the spirit that went into the cabin, the canoe, and all things made by men proud of their work and of what they had learned to do.

Christian,

Well quoted! They have an allure that goes beyond their "beauty" for sure.

Gevonovich -- simple solution ... place an order! "Enable" mode off. ;-) But now you have me wondering how these would look in bikinis ...

You gentleman are killing me with these exquisite beauties!! Birch beauties

You need the matching Leuku....

Here is one that Karl Eric Lindblad just finished for me to my specs with a hand forged blade (ss2258 and 15N20) from Göran Enocksson. Reindeer spacer with Massur Birch. Thanks for looking.

Oh my ..... that is one of the most magnificent puukkos I have ever seen, Kris!!! What a pearl.

That is beautiful, are you going to use it or put it in a display case?

If they release a book on puukkos, hint hint authors that visit here, this knife would take the cover!

Congratulations, I love mine. Enjoy:)

Kris - that´s a great looking Puukko! Congratz on that beauty.

I´ve thought long for a getting a Puukko myself and have limited it down to a Karesuando Puukko finally. Now I just need the $$ (or in my case the €€) :D

This thread directly led to my purchase of two puukkos, with another on my "wish list". While one isn't traditional in the strictest sense (Spyderco), it is a beautiful knife and hard to put down. That led to me getting a Paaso in birch/reindeer which is a sweet little knife.
One of these days I really want to pick up one with birch bark handles, though the one on my wish list is a Marttiini with an owl pommel, a reminder of my Wood Badge patrol. Maybe for my birthday...

Congrats on a beautiful knife Kris!

HFinn, that Kullervo looks really nice with the patina
That knife is on my short list!

Kris, is that your blade glowing in Mr. Enocksson's tongs? Very cool if it is! That one is a true cutlery gem!

Nice knives HFinn. Thank you Duane, it is not my knife in the pic, but I thought it was a great pic of Göran, who I highly respect.
