Quail Hunting

Nice pics and thread to have with my coffee this morning David..I never shot birds myself over dogs but got to go along with my Dad and Grandfather pheasant hunting in Nebraska when I was 4 or 5..The first time I ever hunted with dogs was rabbit hunting with Kathy's Dad in West Virginia on a cold morning over 40 years ago. I still remember how excited the beagles were..and how quick you had to shoot. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

Will Rogers said "If there are no dogs in heaven, when I die, I want to go where they went."

I have had the pleasure to be around some really fine hunting dogs, mostly Labrador retrievers. One friend I trained and hunted with had Labs but also, had Al, a GSP was special. His owner had a double wide on 200 acres of river bottom. After breakfast we would let Al out the door, finish our coffee, gather our hunting gear, then go out the door. We would find Al on point, walk up and flush the covey, hopeful to hit a few for Al to retrieve. As I said Al was special, not only would he point and retrieve upland, he would also retrieve waterfowl, and, he would also handle...meaning that he didn't have to see where the bird dropped, you could line him up by your side send him on his name. If he went off course, you could blow the whistle, he would sit and face you. You could then direct him with hand signals, left or right, over, angle back or straight back to the area of the downed bird.

Dutch, handles and will point, but if the bird moves he will go in and flush.

Hawkeye, thanks.
PJ, thanks. A great photo of Dutch and a rooster. Your gun looks like the Beretta Magnum.? I've read good things about that gun. DM

Pilot1, great! Thanks. Do you miss your friend? DM

Yes, I miss him very much. He was easy to train, and always stayed within eyesight of me when hunting. He seemed he just knew the right distance. I hope my next one is like that. Looking to get one this Spring! If they can't jump over the brush, they just go right through it! Amazing dogs.

David that is a hide from a Rocky Mountain Elk.

My eyesight has taken a turn for the worse,so I mounted a Burris Speed Bead.It is a red dot sight that mounts between the rear of the frame and the front of the stock.

I also have been using one of these on one of my turkey guns with great success. It allows me to zero the center of my pattern.

It's the angle of the picture that makes that barrel appear so long.It is 28" with a Pattern Master Code Black goose choke.

Thanks for sharing David ... not much beats watching a good dog work birds ... I've owned a couple German Shorthair dogs that were really good hunters ... but ranged a bit more in wide open fields ... so I moved to Brittneys and Labs later on ... and of everything I've had the privilege to hunt upland bird hunting is still my favorite.

Thanks JJ & Sporting. My black dog works just about like a Brittney. Yes, at times Andy gets a bit wide. But He responds well to a whistle.
This dove I took this afternoon. We have a mixed bag season going now thru Jan. 1st. The black dog found it and retrieved it, growling the
whole time coming to me with it. You dog men know, -- because Andy was nearby. I used the screwed frame 110 to process it.
Andy thinks, he really did it all! DM

A cold front is moving in tomorrow morning and bringing snow in for the 24. I may not take my dogs out until favorable weather returns.
So, I hope you liked these and they hold you for a while. DM
