Quail Hunting

A couple of pictures of the snow would be timely for the Holiday! :)

Your weather turns on a dime out there, doesn't it.

Andy brought me this one this afternoon. A rooster. DM

He's a great dog! You are really making me want to accelerate my search for a GSP pup and start the training! I don't know what part of the country you are from, but the people that used to own Sierra Trading Post (before they sold to Marshalls group) in Cheyenne, WY used to raise champion GSP's. They had some beautiful dogs.

BuckShack, yes it does. 3 days nice then we'll get a winter hit. We live on the Continental Divide and the storms follow that down. Should we
get snow I'll give you a picture. Might be rain.?
Pilot1, Thanks. My dog's registered name is Ruger's Silver Bullet. But I had a friend named Andy... So, I call him that in memory of my friend.
My dog is high energy and I don't think he would make a good house dog. He likes being out running and smelling more than anything. He helps me get out and exercise, even when I may not want to. He has a gentle desire to want to understand and do what you want of him.
I began working with him at 4 mos.. Simple commands. He took to it and at 6 mos. he pointed and retrieved his first quail. We were amazed. DM

This storm has now passed, so, I took my dogs out for them to get some exercise. All of us have been shut in for a day. It was 16* this morning and will not make it above freezing
today. Thus, a short workout was all I would allow. They found some quail and I downed 2 a rooster & a hen. My little black dog found 1 and Andy the other. I used the screwed frame 110 to process them. It works well. Maybe a little better than my 334 Trapper. Woops,-- disregard that comment! DM

Here, I only have 2 more days of quail season left. Thus, it is my hope this inspires someone to get out and tramp the hills, in search of a
grouse, pheasant or quail with your dog, favorite shotgun and Buck knife. It will do you and your dog a lot of good. Who knows people at
the office may notice the change. DM

sporting, thanks. After checking, It is only Dove season that ends on Jan. 1st. Quail season goes to Feb. 15th.. Yahoo! DM

David, I am envious of being able to go outside the house and hunt quail.

Thanks, 300Bucks. I limit myself & dog to one bird / day of quail. Some days a pair of birds, on a unusual day. Then a lot of days we don't get
any. We walk a lot and the birds aren't around. Other days I can't hunt or it's bad weather. A Hard winter like this and my dogs will bring me stiff birds the following morning. Unless the coyotes get to them first. I'll work Andy several times on that one bird. Hiding it and then calling him to retrieve before we get back to the house for a picture. So, some things are at work here before you see the product. More later, DM

Field & Stream quality picture David - just perfect! OH

Thank you Hunter. I enjoy getting out and exercising, both body & mind. Coordination better be working at a flush because from the time you see the bird I normally have one second to mount, move to the target and fire. These birds know how to put a tree or bush between you and them, when making their get-away. These are not like shooting ducks or dove. It's a different game and different shooting skills are called upon. May you gents have a blessed New Year. DM
