Quartermaster Mr Roper vs Spyderco Paramilitary 2

Para 2 all the way: American company that is upstanding in everyway, Proven design, Amazing ergonomics, solid heat treated steel, and pocket carryability that is hard to match

They come in so many varieties you can choose according to your price point as well.

If it was my money I'd stay far away from Qtrmstr, or however they want to misspell words of their company name

I can tell you that the Paramilitary 2 wins by default because it's not a garbage Quartermaster product. At least I know where the PM2s are made.

The para 2 has an amazing track record for being a great knife, very hard to fault. The Roper, besides its childish and stupid name,is not a bad knife as far as materials and function, but as said above the knife is most likely made overseas, which isn't bad, but they put out a video of some guy claiming to be the machinist in Texas making them.I did however see a picture of a roper knife on the same machinery as the We knives from China;which isn't bad thay make good stuff, but Quartermaster for some reason wants everyone to think their knives are made here.Even their spicoli model looks like a similar china made knife, forgot the maker.Para military is the way to go on this comparison. At least theres no denying where its made, the quality, and a company who backs their products.

I like the look of the MR but I have read enough complaints about the QC, and then there's all that other stuff....

The PM2 is a modern classic, you either love it or at least respect it, so there's no going wrong with that knife.
Since there are some great blade steels available now, I would recommend the M4 version.

My PM2 is one of the best production folders I have had. It exudes quality in fit and finish. It is strong but light and refined. I seriously doubt the other knife is in the same class as the PM2. I know of no one who hasn't been happy with their PM2.

Easy choice, good luck getting proof the steel they use is what they claim it is at qtrmstr. Ask the same question of spyderco and get an answer from the owner.

Don't support shysters.

If you feel that someone saying an objectively crap company is crap is rude or nasty, the internet may not be for you.

How about you go read about all the shady antics they have pulled before telling members who clearly know more about the subject than you they are acting like children.
when I say acting like children, I'm referring to people who are condescending towards people who are simply trying to gather information. Not everyone knows every company. I just heard of quartermaster the other day. Had no prior knowledge of them. So when someone comments and is being facetious and acting like I should know better, then yea I'm going to call you a child.

Crap
Condescending
Childish
Rude
Nasty

All opinions. If you don't want opinions, don't come here and ask for opinions.
idk how many more posts are like this but you're misunderstanding. I think it's childish and condescending to be rude towards ME for not knowing about this company already. It's one thing to tell me "they're a bad company because..." but it's a whole other thing to make me seem stupid for not knowing about the company.

I understand there is a search function. But the threads to may find can be outdated. For example, 'aybe a company has changed since the post came out. Maybe a company has come out with a wider variety of knives. A lot of the info is dated. I mean bladeforums has been around for a while. I doubt ANYONE would actually have to continue asking questions considering they have probably already been asked...and also people join the forums everyday. Maybe newer members can have different input that can be more helpful.

Honestly these forums are for people to trade information and knowledge. Not to belittle or condescend others. Hell, I saw a thread saying smith and Wesson and tac force are the best knives. I highly disagreed and gave my two sense in a polite and informative way, rather than telling the op he's an idiot for not knowing better.

Wow. All we said was that qrtrmaster sucks and that there is a bunch of threads on the subject. Also, that spyderco was great in comparison.

And to answer your concern of the current nature of the threads, they are not outdated. Once you steal, lie, and cheat you are a bad company, pretty much forever. I mean, would you trust such a company? Plus, the dates are on the threads. Did you look at them?

Why do you have two threads that are exactly the same?

Hey JDX, let me give you an opinion.

I own both knives. Both are really good. If you go for the basic model PM2, it will be less expensive than the Roper. There are many variants available of both knives.

There is the original small Roper, the Roper XLS which is the same size as a PM2 (see picture), and the Roper Eviction, which has a flipper and a thicker blade.

Again, the basic Black G10 PM2 is going to run you between 100-125 depending on where you get it. The Roper XLS will be a bit more than that. The Roper is available with a tanto and drop point blade as well.

Both knives are very smooth to operate. The Roper is a framelock that runs on bearings, The PM2 compression lock is very slick. Both knives will hold their value fairly well also.

It really is a good comparison that you brought up here since they knives will likely fill the same role for the end user.

If there is anything else I can answer for you, let me know.

Hi. I only own and use the PM2 so I can only speak for that one :) and I’m not a fan of Quartermaster; not so much for all the “knife dramas” behind (which is nevertheless quite telling, interesting and entertaining to read :D and let’s consider it’s not only a Quartermaster thing, take Strider, for example ;)) but because I don’t really like the style and technical solutions of most of their products (double/triple thumb studs, weird multiple grinds, Klingon/sci-fi blade shapes, excessive thicknesses, etc.).

But, as a knives hobbyist and no expert at all, when it comes to this comparison, I have to ask: are the two really comparable, besides overall size and weight? Looks to me materials are different (steel, handle, liners, etc.), locks are different, grinds are different, blade style/shape is different, etc. “On papers” it looks to me the Mr. Roper is slightly “better” (?) as far as handle materials (e.g. Ti vs. SS and G10) but, for my EDC use, worse in terms of cutting performances (blade steel, geometry, grind) and versatility (e.g. pocket clip positioning). I just can say my PM2 it’s a great knife, a laser beam and can withstand all the tasks I put her through performing flawlessly (my long version here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1383249-Spyderco-Paramilitary-2)

Never tried the Mr. Roper, so can’t say :). It would be interesting for me to read/watch some users’ reviews (beyond the several table top show and tell)! If you go for that and will try it out I will read a report with pleasure! Good luck with your choice!

IME it's best to ask your friendly search engine before you ask on an enthusiast board. Enthusiasts of anything have strongly held opinions which is what makes them enthusiasts.

Not opinion. It is a fact that qrtrmaster is a crap company and spyderco is a great company. Don't know how anyone could be offended by these facts.

I love how the senior members of this forum are more interested in starting petty arguments than actually helping someone. Great job guys.

Seriously. JDX has a point. He's not disagreeing with anyone about QTRMSTR. He's just noting that people are jumping on HIM for not magically knowing that QTRMSTR is complete shit. Share your knowledge or gtfo. Jesus I take a hiatus from BF and come back to find the same people doing the same shit getting defended by the same people.

Hey Gravy, I'm in Austin too :)
