Question about hunting rifles.....

The one I shot that my friend has is a 300 win mag and probably is the most accurate semi auto I have ever shot.

BAR... there was a guy I worked with here in the late 80s that had one built up in .458 win... three rounds only but damn what a three quick rounds that was ..!! He read about it in Guns and Ammo I think and had to have one made up for himself... :) My .375H&H is a pussycat to shoot so I saw no need for anything bigger (sold my .460 Weatherby as a result).

Recently had a chance to shoot both a 375 H&H and a 460 Weatherby and I would not describe either of them as pussycats. Maybe just that aprticular gun but the 375 kick worse than a lot of upset horses I have known.

I have an old (1970s) Winchester M70 in H&H that is MUCH nice to use than my .300Win, what rifle was it in Garth ??

Is is a pic of my best mate (he is much more lightly built than me) at full recoil with the H&H and a .300gn load.... I hunted rabbits with it for the rest of that afternoon... :)

Hey Peter, you have a close up of those QR rings?

Hi Mark,

I have'nt got a pic on my lap top of the mounts up close but they are Apel EAW Pivot Mounts. Here is a link to the mounts which shows them in close up. Mine are the ones on the top.

http://www.eaw.de/en/products/pivot-mounts.html

The mounts work excellently due to extreme tolerances in their "mating" ... they can bring a scope back to repeated zero no problem so long as the barrel is not removed. They are an engineering work of art.

The Sauer 202 takedown does have a quirk when you remove the barrel. The bolt headspaces the barrel when the barrel is changed and the bolt is closed and locked down. However, there is only so much pressure you can apply by hand to push the barrel into place. If you just use hand pressure to do this you will likely at 100 yards have the first shot go high by 1 inch and slightly to the right for the first shot. After this the recoil beds the barrel in and the second and subsequent shots are back to zero and the rifle "bugholes" with handloads giving single hole groups.

To avoid this slight loss of zero for the first shot after assembling the rifle I take a medium sized pencil erazer and tape it to the crown of the barrel to protect it. Then before I fit the scope and the silencer I tap the barrel on the floor using the rubber as a cushion to simulate the recoil of the first shot. I then remove the eraser and fit the scope and the moderator ( I use a little red locktite on the moderator threads to be sure it stays in place ). You don't need to tap hard to settle the barrel ... the movement will be imperceptible and much more is likely to do with "harmonics" in the barrel which can alter POI when the torque settings change. The tap just "seems to work" and the scope goes back to zero very precisely. If you have ever seen Apel mounts and how they interface you can see why.

Using the technique of the "tap" ( with the bolt closed and locked down as per "recoil" ) I have assembled the rifle from scratch after a session in the tunnel range and changing to the .375 H&H barrel with no scope to sight in some loads and once back to 6.5 x 55 AI "mode" I have test fired it again and put the round into the same single hole cluster. You cannot say better than that for real world use. For a "take down" rifle this is in another League to other takedowns I have used for repeatable accuracy.

The H&H i had a chance to shoot was a Savage with a synthetic stock. Probably just lighter weight than what it should be.

Have you given any thoughts to a custom?

Seeing as everyone here appreciates the best and will wait and pay for it (Busse Knives) I think recommending a custom isn't a bad idea. I hear very good things about GA Precision and Surgeon.
