Question about the Griptilians and QC

I expected a brand new $67 knife from them to be razor sharp, like my $31 Rat-1 and Tenacious. After they failed at that, I figured they might pay for shipping and sharpening. For example, I once had a problem with a supplement company I bought from. I let them know the problem, and they payed $45 overnight shipping so I could send them it back, then sent me a replacement just as fast. Now THATS customer service.

completely agree.

it's a knife ! if it doesn't cut from factory wtf ??? i don't expect someone who buys his first tool to be fully equiped, and he should have enjoyed his knife a little while before needing anything.

and i do reprofile most of my knives right out of the box, but this doesn't meand they can ship butter knives.

but on a related note i think that factory shouldn't let customer pay shipping for a defective product period. even one year after, if the fail is covered by warranty, all the expenses should be imo.

The three recent Mini RSKs in CPM-M4 that I received all had blunt tips and uneven bevels. The pocket clips were also all rough around the edges.

I have also noticed that recent Benchmades are coming with a small and steep edge bevel.
It's not an issue for me as I can rectify these issues, but I feel for people who perhaps don't have the ability to get their Benchmade working to its true potential.

Except i've NEVER gotten a new blade that wasn't hair popping sharp from Spyderco

How many have you bought? Just because you have NEVER had it happen doesn't mean it does not happen. I have had quite a few that will barely shave a hair off my arm. And if I sent the knife back to Spyderco, guess what? I would have to pay for return shipping.

Because I use  does that give my post some kind of extra meaning? Does that somehow discredit what a person wrote?

Hey David! BIG fan of the Griptilian here... currently have a 555HG and a 551BK-101 (Gold Class)... LOVE them both. The Gold Class actually was one of the duller knives I've ever bought new....totally disappointing. Only took 50 strokes on the corners and flats of the Sharpmaker White stones to get up to spec though. Otherwise the knife is freakin amazing! best. BM. ever. made!

The 550HG is the only Grip I own. These pictures are new but it has seen some good use over the past 2 and a half years. It is my camping/hiking knife clipped with my Seb in a belt sheath. The grip is the lender and the user most of the time when camping and hiking and only I use my seb (people do stupid things to knives and the seb has sentimental value) and even then I stand looking over their shoulder to see what they use my grip for.

Anyway. Here are the pics.

Short and sweet. Its a great knife till this day. You cant go wrong with a grip. If you buy from a dealer then inspect the knife and find one you are happy with before purchase.

Does acting like a douchebag in every single topic I read with your meaningless raging give your responses extra meaning? I'm entitled to state my opinion and experiences and I've bought 8 spydercos that all came razor sharp. Does the fact that I didnt buy 300 mean I cant say anything? You're frankly an idiot and a really bitter one thats always trolling. I seriously hope you're 13 years old because you sound like a emo, angry little kid. I've never seen someone get offended like you over a smiley face... Pretty pathetic. If you're actually an older gentleman then frankly I'd be ashamed of myself if I were you  OH NOEZ NOT THE SMILEY FACE TAKE COVER!!!

There is no room for this kind of language/behavior here. Please keep these kinds of posts out of the forums. This is a hostility free zone. Thanks :)

To the original poster:

I've purchased 5 spyderco's: a sage 1 and 2, delica, native, and a tenacious. All came shaving sharp or beyond from the factory.

I have also purchased 3 griptilians, 2 came shaving sharp (barely) from the factory, the other one was somewhat dull.

FYI I sent them both back to benchmade and they sent me two sharp knives back, and a free teeshirt. They also rebuilt both knives and lubricated them so that they felt better than any other new benchmade I have picked up. So in a sense, I sent them two new knives, and they sent back two better than new knives and a teeshirt, and refunded my shipping.

Two months later, when pulling one of the grips out of the box and EDCing it for a couple weeks I noticed that the D2 blade that it was supposed to have was marked 154cm. So I called them up. They told me they didn't sell a black coated 154cm griptilian. When I told them I was as confused as they are, they said they would talk to the knife maker and call me back...

Next day they leave a message on my voicemail telling me they apologize for the mistake, and were sending me another D2 griptilian. They explained there was no need to send the 154cm knife back, and that they would cover all the postage.

So in essence my dull griptilian turned into a free knife and a teeshirt. Beat that customer service! The only other company I know of that operates anything remotely similar is Surefire.

So to anyone bad mouthing Benchmade: You are either being dishonest or you didn't explain your problem effectively to them. They literally bend over backwards to help their customers.

FYI I think benchmades overall feel more dull than spyderco because their grinds are totally different. Also, even though some of their edges won't whittle hair out of the box, the edges last a long time before going dull.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend spyderco or benchmade to anyone. My mini grips fit and finish and overall feel is on par with my William Henry knives and my Sebenza.

I write this having spent quite a bit of money on knives since I joined BF. If I had to have just one folder, my mini grip would be a fine choice.

I own a few grips and the only one that wasnt shaving sharp was a tanto 553. A few swipes on a sharpmaker did the trick.

my 710 came from the factory pretty dull and with a rounded tip

I spent about 10 minutes on the sharpmaker, and it's super sharp

that was easy.

I guess it's hit and miss.... My710 came in last week hair poppin sharp and very pointy

That's funny! You're ranting and raging way more than I ever have. You are quite the hypocrite and you are acting exactly the way you describe in your 'post'. Good luck around here throwing tantrums.

I see they don't treat all their customers the same...

I just use my ignore feature when I continually read angry or ignorant posts from the same person over and over. It works well.

Where am I ranting and raging? All I did was call you out on your hilarious rant about a SMILEY FACE  hahahaha. Thanks for the laughs.

So this is a "hilarious rant"? :

Because I use  does that give my post some kind of extra meaning? Does that somehow discredit what a person wrote?

But the garbage you wrote that you got an infraction for and that is now crossed out by a moderator was not a rant?

Riiiight. No, thank you for the laugh.

All I did was ask a question about the meaning or the implied tone a smiley face gives a post. I don't know why you think I was bothered by it?

To answer the OP I bought two of the M4 Griptilians and both of mine were nearly perfect and I was one of the first to get my order. One was slightly off center but that is the only flaw I could find. A few others had problems with that run but I didn't see it. My 550HG that was bought about a year ago was also made really well.

FYI I got a warning for language, not for the content of my post. It's pretty obvious you are just an angry angry sad man when you have to nitpick someone else's post about an emoticon they used. I mean really? Do you really have NOTHING else to do? Does a full grown adult really have to pick a fight with someone over something as silly as that? Anyway I'm going to take the good advice I recieved and use the ignore option so I dont have to deal with clowns. Good day.

Enough.

If you guys are not going to post with respect take it to W&C. General Discussion is not the place for these antics.

When you say "a few swipes on a Sharpmaker", can you please give a little more detail -- Such as, which rods you're using and which angle they are set for? Very much appreciated!!

I dont know who you are referring to specifically but for what its worth I profile my edges to 17* inclusive, then I just maintain at a 20* inclusive edge.

A few swipes depends on the edge damage, usually when it is dull 20 strokes per side with the medium rods and 15 on the fine. If it start losing its shaving sharpness then just 5 strokes per side on the fine and I can shave again.

I EDC a MiniGrip in 154cm for the last 3 years or so. Knife was very well built, came sharp and stays that way. However, I have two large chips in the handles that expose the liners. I wish that the handle material was more impact resistant (chips happened when clip was snagged and knife pulled from pocket, falling on my linoleum floor).
