Question about the Griptilians and QC

No brand is free from human errors and these knives are hand sharpened. Why is that so hard to understand? I've had BMs come razor sharp and I've had BMs come dull out of the box. Sames goes for uneven grinds. And the same can be said of the occasional Spyderco. But overall, neither brands are consistently bad.

As per the OP's post, I've had Grips come with poor grinds and dull edges while others were excellent. I've never had to send any BMs in for warranty work and the dull edge was easily reground and sharpened by me. So at least for myself, it was not an issue. Just a few minutes on the paper wheels was all it needed.

I have had a few Spydercos that required warranty work but I own 15x as many Spyderco knives as I do BM. So it's just the odds catching up with me.

If I needed another Griptilian, I would buy one without reservation.

Hi David -

In the last 9 months, I have ordered two mini-grips and a full sized Ritter grip in CPM M4.

All three were flawless to my eye, all centered well, perfectly ground, and very high-quality overall.

The more I become familiar with Benchmade, the more I like them.

I think the Griptilians are very nicely made knives that will provide a very long service life.

best regards -

where does one even get one of these special steel ritters? I can only find the normal s30v steel ritters on equipped or aeromedix.com

Hi rainermh12 -

There was a special run of these made for Mr. Ritter, and they were available through Aeromedix for a short while.

I just checked the www.aeromedix.com web site, I searched for Ritter M4, and they are showing the mini M4 in stock and shipping. The large version is sold out.

I would add that Aeromedix was a great place to deal with in my experience.

I own several Grips in different sizes, and have never had a bad one. All of them came razor-sharp out of the box. In fact, IMO, the Grips tended to have some of the best OOB edges in the BM lineup. All my 710 knives and TSEK axis locks also came with great edges.

I really like BM knives a LOT, but I have noticed lately that some of their newer knives (that I've seen on display at Sport Chalet) look like they barely have edge bevels on them. Similar to some BM knives I purchased around 10 years ago. I reprofiled those with no problem, but I still prefer the edges done right OOB. It can't be any more difficult to apply an appropriately sharp edge at the factory than a dull, obtuse one, and it shouldn't be hard to tell the difference during initial sharpening, either. I only say this because, again, I really like the BM knives that I have, and hope that BM returns to making the proper edge bevels on their knives more consistently.

I love the Griptilian, but I'm not crazy about the cheap feeling plastic grip. It doesn't take away from function, just wish it was higher quality.

To throw my $0.02 in, I just got a full size Ritter, F&F was great with the exception of the blade being a hair off center, but it was very sharp with even grinds. I didn't care about the blade being off center (it didn't rub) since I was putting it in Cuscadi scales since I don't like the stock ones...

I EDC a MiniGrip in 154cm for the last 3 years or so. Knife was very well built, came sharp and stays that way. However, I have two large chips in the handles that expose the liners. I wish that the handle material was more impact resistant (chips happened when clip was snagged and knife pulled from pocket, falling on my linoleum floor).

Had the same thing, send it to Benchmade. They replaced mine without any problems.

Got to remember that since sharp blades are the norm, people won't be posting about getting a razor edge on a new Grip as much as people do about getting a dull one. In actuality, the number of dull blades coming out may be exactly the same, just that some people choose to speak up here.

My first BM knife, and my first knife EVER is a HK 14210, I received it two days ago and I'm very disappointed. Blade is not centered, axis lock grinds and sticks, knife sticks, can't cut anything.

I called and it sounds like I'll have to send it in for warranty service and probably pay shipping even though I haven't been able to use the knife one bit. I'm not very excited to deal with them considering how blunt their employee was over the phone and how grossly dysfunctional the knife is.

I'm considering just returning it.

There were a lot of issues with the CPM-M4 Ritter Grips. My take is that BM really let Aeromedix down on this project, but I also think (based on regular reading at the BM forums) that the issues with the Grips have been basically confined to the M4 Ritters. I don't see mass complaints about other Grips, or about other BM folders.
