Question about what to do with some old knives

3 in 1 or sewing machine oil is what I use. It is a light mineral oil .Be aware that "mineral oil" is an umbrella term for a few different oils eg hydraulic oil which is not edible .
And dont forget to read the instructions. :)

Iris - in NZ here it's Johnsons Baby Oil.

I have a mental image of you coo cooing to your knives whilst applying baby oil on a change table. Mate as you know I could take that a lot further but geez it made laugh.
On ya.:p

You're a funny fella Meako ;) :D
Yes thats a good idea Jack because its just getting silly. pictures of Echidnas for heavens sake. Its those claws you gotta watch out for.
Any "questions" I can help with about your knives moving forward Please don't hesitate to PM me Iris.

Oh and btw Iv'e got some baby budgies going cheep if anyones interested..... come on its a classic.

Patiently waiting for my Box o' Ettricks to make their way here from New Zealand!:D
Thanks Iris!!

This was really a great thread: a mysterious find; lots of information; a little drama; some comedy; some suspense; and a happy conclusion. Well done all!

Sweet! Whatcha gonna do with 'em?

I'm not 100% sure yet, Rachel. I will surely post some scans here, and maybe I will show them off at the Oregon Knife Show in April.
(Shameless plug for the Show!!)
They need oil, and a little rubbing at the rust I can see on them, maintaining original finishes of course!
I will wrestle with the idea of selling a few, or keeping them intact! A full box of older knives is a rare thing.

Well I see a Guardians of the Ettrick society starting! Good they are on the way north! I can't tell you how long I have waited to use that pun, Mr. Charlie!

Ha ha! I love puns, the corny-er(sp?) the better!

Bart fell off his bike , but Bart'll be O.K!:)

Heh. . . . . .

You know, a lot of people have learned some good details about Lambfoot knives with the eponymous thread and sig lines! Maybe a Guardians of the Ettrick Society is a worthwhile endeavor!

Congrats, Charlie and Iris ! I think they found the right home

Become the Canadian distributor of Young's Sheep Dips ;)

Thanks for the congrats, Jake!

I think I'll stick to Barlows, and leave the "Dip" to someone else!!;)

Keep 'em together as long as you can, they are quite likely the record of the day's work of a single mester (and his supporting parts supply network). Together, through comparison, they will tell a lot about how he approached his work of final assembly. Apart, they are each interesting old knives but a unique little historical reference point will be lost. Just sayin.

Through my attendance at the School of Hard Knocks, I have learned to at least try not to rush such decisions, Mr. Bartleby! They shall remain together for some time to come!

Well done Charlie. I look forward to further conversations with you about these knives.

I have a wee Ettrick or two or... ? coming my way as well. Some as you saw bearing fairly heavy surface rust- they are what they are and there will be no attempt to shine these knives- although I will stop the rust.

Lol Meako my friend- often I feel I must explain why there is a bottle of Baby Oil on my desk - with rags!
But if you know what! It works and if you know what your doing with 0000 grade Steel Wool- ( no other grade or you'll scratch or shine ) you can do a nice arresting job on the rust.

I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on these knives Charlie

Charlie, Duncan- I've booked you a passage on the next ship bound for Australia. When you come ashore its a mere 6 days by bullock dray to the inland city of Goulburn. Here stands the big merino-as you see he is in need of some ettrick attention.
you'll prolly need the whole box to get the job done.:D

too true broo:thumbup:

Similar situation with mineral oil here. I used to use the "unscented" stuff for soaking certain knives, but even the smell of that makes me retch!

I get the same sensation when I see the price of "mineral" water.:barf:
