Question for members. Please all respond.

Hello,

I'm with Gus! I think it's a great idea, and it would be great if there could be a custom or semi-custom every couple or three months...perhaps four times a year, as long as it doesn't impede on the maker's waiting lists. Every month for a production piece wouldn't be too bad.

Take care,
John Johnson

The idea is a good one.
But we have to ensure that the selected items are not put forward as "the best". maybe the "most lusted after" or the "most wanted" would be more appropriate.
After all, it is pretty obvious that some members are going to be voting with their druthers rather than actual experience.
Frankly, I have owned a few production knives that are high on the " Forum lust list" which I did not "love" while they were in my hands and passed them on.
Not chucking cold water on the enthusiasm....just don't want the forum to be a source of (possible) misleading info to new members or lurkers who might become members.

The dealers have been very helpful to us new comers. As long as they don't mind, Let's Do It
I could not afford one every month, but would love to pick one up every so often.

If we need to support this site dues are what most clubs use. It would be hard to sell a knife without treading on any retailer. Now a quarterly raffel of any high quality production or even custom should help to raise enough cash. Take a poll and see what there willing to spend 100.00 on a purchase or 5.00 on a raffel chance. If 25% buy a chance you do the math. That my .02

Sounds good to me

I really like it! I know I, for one, could use a shot at getting hot knives at a better price (if you can really cut the price a bit, not so much that you don't profit of course :-)). It would also be a great way to decide which knives we really feel are "the best". We have SOOOO many posts on that question, and we come to no final conclusion. This would be a great way to do so.

I'm with Mercury and Bald1, cut back the frequency and those of us with children to feed and clothe can save up the scratch.

Also, to address the concern of competition with dealers...
I don't think that it would be enough to damage anyone's business. A few reasons:
-It would only be three knives a month, and I can't think of any dealers who don't carry a few HUNDRED models.
-MOST of us do not buy a knife every month.
-We do not all buy from the same dealers.
-The dealers have business other than us, so don't flatter yourselves TOO much :-)

So the only way we could really hurt anyone's business would be if we ALL bought EVERY knife from Bladeforums, and no one else bought from the other dealers.
Let me say that I am certainly proud to be a member of a group who would be that thoughtful!!!

Hello here's my $.02.

I liked the quarterly plan better than the monthly plan. This way only 12 knives a year are chosen. The more limited the number the more ferocious the debate.

I also have to say I liked the raffle plan. I'd easily throw down five or ten dollars (per ticket or chance) to win a knife that is worth ten times that. Hell, if someone really wants it, he'll buy more chances won't he? If this idea were feasible and took off, I don't see why customs couldn't be solicited for raffles.

Hi Everybody,
Sounds like a great idea Mike, goodluck!

Dang Mike, between you and Sal, I guess I will have the State deposit my check to WOW. Sounds like a great idea!

The competition with the dealers rule would be an issue but in a very small way. That is why we would limit it to 3 knives a month. Plus keep in mind the dealers benefit from the forums tremendously from being able to post here for free and using the auction. Not to mention the extremely low cost of the banners.

I have already ran the idea past several dealers and none expressed any problems with it after hearing the full scale plan.

The full scale plan includes advertising for dealers who advertise here in the magazines. They simply could not do this on their own as it would be very cost prohibitive. Our first ad hit this month. Only a few dealers I know of advertise. By generating revenue we would be helping them through our ads. There is more to this issue that will help the dealers who advertise here. More about that later if the dealer issue becomes a problem.

The simple fact is, as long as BFC continues to grow and we spend more time here we must generate a revenue. Each other forum has some source of regular income and we do not. The store generates very little in sales, the banners only make so much and a special knife every now and then creates more problems sometimes than it is worth and that is just plain fact.

I would like input from more dealers on the subject as there may be an issue I am missing in thought from my perspective.

The other issue is how often we should do this. Once a month is optimum. Of course you may not be able to get each knife we offer each month. This is not meant to satisfy each individual but the members as a whole, and once a quarter is just too long to wait IMHO.

Keep the idea rolling as this is just an idea for now.

I'm for the idea as you originally outlined it, Mike. IMO, more surveys = more choices = higher participation. At least, that's I hope it would work out. If you find the logistics of a monthly offering to be too problematic, after a month or two it could be changed to quarterly.

In principle it sounds like a resonable idea but I have a feeling that the novelty would wear off fairly quickley.

I have a problem, being outside the USA, from ordering stuff from the Bladeforum store or any dealer I do not have a relationship with because of the issue of, how shall I put it, curcumventing our expensive customs duty and VAT regime.

This was the only reason I did not buy one of the natives as it would have put the price up by nearly 30%
