Maybe we can get a forum Ti Military with the blade different than S30V? Or better a Ti Para 2................. :(

I should probably mention that the Cruwear Military is CPM Cruwear. The first powdered Cruwear to be used in production. I'm sure enjoying mine.

Hi Sal, to avoid the 72 threads asking "Whats the hardness of my CruWear Millie?" Is their any chance you could get a RC reading on yours?

Sal, I honestly hope it went a little easier on your heat treater and cutlers than Ingot Cruwear then. As for me, I didn't know there was any. I know about Z wear and PD1 but had no idea that you were going for powder Cruwear.

These foundries seem to really be warming up to the knife industry as more than just guys to call up when you have a bit extra you will favor them by selling to them ( BG42 a few years back). Did they run it for you like they did BD1?

This is an interesting turn. I'm glad you are enjoying yours. Vascowear/cruwear can cut. I believe it should sell very well too.

Thank you Sal,

Joe

Hi Toxicbot,

I'll test my "Mastiffwear" piece tomorrow.

Hey Joe,

Crucible and Niagara have been working hard to make special steels for the knife afi's. They are to be commended. When we were ordering the steel, we were informed that they had just made a billet of CPM Cruwear and were we interested? Spyderco? Interested in a new high performance blade steel? Why would they think that?

sal

Why would they think that?

Yes, Why indeed! :) I can think of worse reputations to have than one of innovation and pushing the finish line forward. Sal.

Thank you again from all us Knife Knut AFI steel junkys. I hope to be enjoying one of my own in the near future. If anything can move 21 years of Enduras out of my right pocket this will likely be it. I will not insult this variant by locking it away in my safe. Not this time!

I also give my word to never be such a PITA about another steel or model in the future. If I ever get this obsessed again I will either make the knives myself and give you one or just shaddup about it. :o

Actually, we invite the suggestions, especially from those that have a clue, which many here seem to have. Many good models and steels have come from the afi's here.

Sal and/or Jim,
When I first read this, I thought it meant "this Millie is the first powdered, CMP Cruwear production run of any kind!!" and raced to the "Sal's Bombshell" thread on the other forum to blab about it. Then I thought no, you (me) idiot, it probably just means Crucible's CMP Cruwear is the first powdered Cruwear to be used in production, and maybe other things already have been produced with it. So I "corrected" my posts on this and the other thread.

Now it looks like I may have got it right the first time. I would appreciate it if one of you would explain it in "slow English" using words of one syllable or less for us steel noobs :)

Crucible decided to make a billet of Cruwear using the powdered process rather than the normal ingot process. Niagara was going to roll it. The powdered process Cruwear has never been used in a production knife and is not a well known blade steel. We had it rolled for Military thickness. Niagara said that we were the first company using it in a production knife, so I shared that info because I thought Joe would appreciate that particular formula in a powdered steel.

Cruwear is another name for a steel available long ago called Vascowear. Some steel junky's like Joe (Mastiff) and I remember enjoying the steel back when Gerber made knives with it. Joe has been nagging us to make something with the steel for years.

Hope that helps.

This is why Spyderco is a staple in my collection.:thumbup:

Wow, this is why I love Spyderco.

Forgive my ignorance but what are the properties of Cruwear? I see that it is a wear resistent tool steel and non stainless. Is is more wear resistant than S30V? And will it hold a razor edge longer that S30V?

Any chance you could test the hardness of it Sal? On the fence about this one since I have quite a few Militarys and prefer CF to G10 for scales...

Cheers

Sal, since you have been kind enough to answer a few questions today, i'll throw this one into the hat. Is there any chance of a four way pocket clip on a sprint run military? Or is that something that we just wont see until a "Millie 2"? I would be all over a cruwear military if I could carry tip up. I know that sounds like a silly concern but there's factors that make it a deal killer for me. I guess I should ask around in the maintenance forum, as I'm sure there's a way to modify, but it sure would make it an easy call if i could just buy it like that.

Hi Gringo,

The Sprint run Military is a standard Military. A 4 way clip will be used on the "2" model when we build it, but it would be rather difficult to just slam a 4 way on the current model.

Yes sir, that's what I figured. I'll be patient. Looking forward to it.

Thanks Sal, for sharing these little details of production with us! This is exactly exactly the kind of thing I was wondering about :)

I believe about 6 or 7 without exaggerating Sal. You were not exactly convinced at first, but you were always polite. Maybe that was a mistake in retrospect. :)

As I stated though no more obsessions, no more nagging. There are still a few new steels to try though. I'm not going anywhere. I will always be glad to try a new tool steel or modern take on an old classic. There is still plenty of ground to cover. Even stainless steels (like Niolux )are getting interesting. These are good days indeed!
