Questions about gun safety

Glad to see he did that. I was with the airsoft idea. i started my girlfriend off that way. my intent, was to show her the basics first. i mean the bare bones basics. how to handle a firearm at a gunshop, when asking to look at one. how not to ever put her finger in the trigger well. how to check one out, without dry firing it. how the controls of most modern automatics work.
the proper names of each component, so when i start some instruction, shell know what part im referring to. muzzle discipline. how to clear the weapon, when its handed to her at local shops, and how to hand the gun back to the worker. how to drop the magazine, lock the slide to the rear, check the chamber, let the slide go forward, stick the magazine back in on typical handguns etc etc. though, her A.D.D. prevented me to complete this block of instruction, so i gave up on her, and all civilians incedentally. if they really want to learn, theyll learn.
you can usually tell within the first 5 minutes of the whole deal. if i were you, id ensure he really wants to learn first. if you can actually identify that, then have him buy a typical airsoft pistol, and start up your instruction. when youre confident enough he knows what hes doing, then move on to basic pistol marksmanship. then, when youre satisfied he knows what hes doin there, take him to the range. That was my attempt for my girlfriend anyways.

I'll see how things go. If he completes the class, I'm sure he'll buy a gun shortly thereafter. If he does that, I'll let him shoot on his own or with others for a while. If he hasn't killed or injured himself or anyone else after a few months, perhaps I'll shoot with him sometime. :D

I am glad to hear your co worker is going the Profesional instruction route. Here in NJ you need a gun before you can take many classes so its kind of a catch 22.

I was going to suggest taking him to a gallery type range. I know of one in PA with trained instructors who go over basics and allow you to shoot whatever handguns and long guns you want at a per round price.

I was also going to point out a recent tragedy Here in NJ where and uncle took his nephew to the range not knowing the nephew was depressed. After the uncle showed him propper saftey and technique, the guy shot himself in the head and died. This was on a crowded public range with a range officer on duty.

I often take freinds and co workers shooting Since I figure that an someone who is a bit more knowlegable in firearms is a good thing but I usually wait untill I have a good sense about them. and when I am in doubt I suggest they take a class before I take them shooting. I also keep NRA saftey brochures around and I give them to anyone who is interested.
