Questions for you pros. Newbie searching for EDC, Specs listed

C_k, I looked up the sheepsfoot blade profile. Man, that's it for me. I am relatively new to knives. I have seen different blade shapes, but never really thought about how they cut and for what purpose. For me, that style seems like a good slicer, like for fruit. Also, looks like one might have good control of it shaving stuff, and seems strong when you cut rope or whatever. Thanks. I look at the BM and I know nada about aftermarket stuff. Where can I look at scales? thanks again

I'll give it a shot. Gracias, or as we say here in the landscape business "Grassiass"

If new to knives, to get a feel for S30 steel at a good price the Buck Vantage Pro, look no further. The Kershaw Skyline with Sandvik, again feels super good fro an EDC just because its a not too big no too small knife and if you get a Benchmade try out a mini grip used at about $60 from the forum. Spydercos are wise open but the Chinese stuff is very good for cheap. The Tenacious will be too big under your requirements but you could try a Delica or a Persistence. This is basically the holy Trinity of big knife brands and the most representative of each of the three brands. Knives are kinda fun since you get to try out each one and figure out what you like. An Ontario Rat 2 will also fit the bill for you. All in your price range. For the money its hard to beat each exact model that I put into this post. *** Buy the basic membership to the forum for $10 it will allow you to post a trade of those knives that you bought but don't want.

Just my 0.2 worth!

I'm pretty new, I've only handled a few knives. Nothing fancy yet.
I do own a kershaw shallot which I thought was pretty fast and light. Really nice, except that recirve edge which is hard to sharpen. I'm gonna recommend something which is from china and with a thumb stud. No, I'm not all bull about this recommendation cause frankly, I hate thumb studs and made in china stuffs, not racially of course.
Check out a Sanrenmu 710. Got mind for $9.90 shipped. Get one, use it, wreck it, throw it. Benefits of a $9.90 knife.
The detent is really really tight. But ones you break it in and flicks it open with the thumb stud (note, use the back of your thumbnail, works best), it shoots out like a rocket. Couldn't capture the action of mine on film yet.

But then again, this is just a dirt cheap knife that's made to use and replace. Not bad for $9.90 I'd say.
If you feel otherwise on this sanrenmu 710, you might wanna drop your cash on the skyline. It's not a knife which will intimidate and it's not a pushover in usage either.

I'm curious to what part of Texas your from. New in Texas or made here? A good case should suit your needs just fine or Kershaw or spyderco. Happy searching.

sigsoup,

Born & Bred here. Me, Wife and kids all live in Bryan/College Station...been here about 10-11 years now. Blade needs to be bigger than 2.5" - but smaller than 3". Closer to the 3 feels right.

I've bought/sold/traded quite a few folders. The great share, I get right here on the Exchange. Be careful when buying, but MANY are as-new-in-box, and you save a bundle that way. Sure, lots of good vendors advertise here on the Exchange also, if you want a new folder. You need a membership to buy or trade, and a Gold ($25/yr) to sell, but it's so well worth it.
I like Kershaw, Zero Tolerance, and Benchmade pretty well, but Spyderco is my main love. Yeah, those knives that have the hole in the blade. Excellent knives in all price ranges up to $300 or so.
As much as I love the Spydies, I carry a Chris Reeve folding knife all day, every day. You can buy your size...a small Sebenza...with S30v or S35VN blade-steel slightly used for less than $300 on the Exchange...several days a week. If you don't like it...you can resell it quickly for what you paid for it. They come with titanium or carbon fiber slabs. The titanium scales will scuff with use, but you can always send it back to CR Knives in Utah for a cheap spa job, where the knife is cleaned, the scales are sand-blasted just like new. The small "Sebbie" blade is 2.9" long; the open entire length is 6.9". The weight is 3.0 ounces; a REAL winner. The company also wins the Manufacturers Award each year at the annual Blade Show in Atlanta.

Mr. Cereal_killer suggested the BM mini-grip with sheepsfoot. This is starting to come together. I will check out the other Spyderco y'all have suggested; Delica, Persistence, and Skyline, and the Buck Vantage Pro. Juevos Rancheros!

thanks sonnydaze, I have a landscape business, and I will use it all day most days except Sunday and other church days. For me, I can't justify right now a $100 + for a blade. I am excited about the search and will post what I find. What works for me. Thanks again everyone...getting closer.

OK, as men we like to get to the bottom of things, and I'm having fun trying get to the bottom of this deal. So, far here's what I have found that meets my specs. Thanks for all participating:

1. 2.5< >3" blade; its what fits my hand and what I feel comfortable controlling
2. Somewhere is the 2 to 3 oz range
3. closed length > 4"
4. open length >7"
5. Sharp, sharp, and sharp
6. deep clip installed or able to add
7. If it had S30V, that would be great but I don't know how much these run, so forgive me, maybe way out of my league
8. Slim
9. One handed opening
10. EDC, EDC, EDC: I am not a collector, at least yet, probably what all you said before.
11. Inexpensive, I got a lot of kids y'all:) > $80.
12. Anything I'm missing?
12.

Sonnydaze,

Sounds just like what I want, but I just can't do the $300 knives. I need something under $100. I won't sit idle, I'll abuse it.

cchu518, does that ontario rat 2 open smoothly. Do you have to use the thumb studs or does it have and index flicker deal? I personally like my thumbs.

cchu518, checked out the Buck Vantage Pro, but it is a little too long and heavy. Like the steel though. All y'all browsers get an account and join in. I just did last night. Maybe y'all have some suggestions too. To give is better than receive. It's what it's all about. no what I mean jellybean?

With the knives everyone has suggested, I am down to 2 so far, unless there is a lesser know knife, like the Ontario Rat 2, or something like it.
I am down to the Benchmade Mini Grip, and the Spyderco Persistence. I also like the Buck Small Vantage. I can see the 3 price differences. Thanks to all who helped. I'll keep looking, but this gives me a couple to play with.

cchu518, thanks for the Persistence shout, RedCanoe, the Small Vantage Buck, and Cereal_Killer the BM mini grip choices. I know these are all at different price point, so I may take cchu518 advice and hook up with y'all on the upgrade sale thang, for the more expensive BM. The Spyderco and Buck, I may just buy somewhere. ZZZZZ

Give your new Leek a chance, lots of variations available great knife that is small and very useful

The mini-grip 555(HG) (the sheepsfoot/spyder hole) is about $85 new but come up for sale often lnib for $70, it took a little while but I picked mine up for $60 nib being patient.

The RAT-2 is also a great knife and opens very smooth right out of the box, thumb studs as opposed to a hole but easy to flick with just your thumb, no wrist snap required.

Here's some photos borrowed these from the forum

The skyline is right above the leek which you own. I hated the leek and its delicate tip, I would carry a trapper slipjoint over a leek any day! The skyline though is an incredible knife for not too much money. Really nice flipper at any price and its a smallish knife.

Starting 2nd from top mini grip, delica (waved model it normally doesnt have that hook which allows the blade to deploy automatically from your jeans) The Delica is a lock back so you need two hands to close which is a deal breaker for me. Chris Reeves (this is a $350 Titianium framelock, probably one of the most iconic knife around), And on the bottom is the Buck Vantage

Bottom right is currently my favorite one hand opener I have one in combo edge it a Benchmade mini presidio. For benchmades with the Axis Lock if you hold down the switch the blade basically swing open and close as quick as you can flick your wrist. I like the sequel and presidio over the mini grip because the blade is thinner. But if you are using it every day you might prefer the grip. All in in all the Grip is probbie the best in this price range if I was forced to provide an answer. The Skyline and Buck (I don't like the Buck myself) are probably really close 2nd and 3rds...
