quick question about steel

Go to Scott Gossman and have him make you a small beast out of S7, you will never look back.

i’ll definitely look into it.

after looking at his website i can already tell thats above my budget with the polaris being $300+ unfortunately

Brother, if you LIKE the knife, GET the knife! The only downside to carbon steels is the extra maintenance in certain environments. It's steel, it's not gonna melt. Get some fine steel wool, a good sharpening system or some good stones, and some decent machine oil. Enjoy it, there's nothing like the satisfaction you'll get in using a custom knife. You should not deprive yourself of that, no matter what anyone here might tell you.
Excellent advice, they find knives 100's of years old(carbon steel) that still look great

getting an edc fixed blade made, gonna be a work knife and just overall hard use probably. my steel options are 1095, 1070+CR, and 5160. i was gonna go with 1095 but then was warned about corrosion especially with being in the coastal areas of florida with such high humidity and salt content, then i was told to go with 1070 but i dont know much about steels. what do you guys think would be best?

Baldegale - I would not buy a custom knife for the usages you are talking about.

I use the Spyderco Aqua Salt fixed blade on my boat down in the FL keys. It is my scuba diving knife as well. Awesome knife for humid conditions and the price is very reasonable, IMHO.

Working outside on the coast in Florida, I ve found I like stainless steel work knives best.

Fallkniven and Helle are both excellent knives. I prefer the laminated Helle stainless, but that's just my preference. Either would perform well for the situation you describe. They have been time tested in Norway (Helle) in the same or harsher conditions.

As @Larrin showed in his article, 5160 is a bit tricky to heat treat to full toughness, so I would go with 1070+Cr, should be easier to heat treat and it will be very tough!

welp now i might be making some sacrifices and getting two custom knives. one from Bob Levine and one from Dylan Brugman. Bob lives about an hour away and is an old timer and i cleared up my issues with pay with Dylan. he said hed take paypal goods and services and hell only take $60 up front of the $140 and then when the blade is finished and im satisfied thats when hell take the rest.

not up to me, i have to pick between those 3, its what the blade smith has available!

Ask him which he gets better performance out of, or prefers.

There are several questions I'd have for those choices.

I have 5160, 1095 galore, and 1080, 1070, 1065, 1055, and many others.

I do like 5160, and all the rest.

All of them will rust or corrode in similar circumstances.

5160 a little less so.....

I've carried and used all those steels with out any real issues.

I have some high carbon steel knives that are 100 years old, and used in the kitchen wet!!! I still use them!! My grandfathers butcher knives ( a hopp knife and a skinner) with wooden riveted handles.

People over think this......

Use it, wash it, and don't store it wet. If it gets a bit of rust... wipe it off......

It is a user. The whole world, I including our country was conquered with carbon steel....
