i'm not very educated on steel types, does anyone mind giving me a short lesson?

In terms of wear resistance: D2 -> A2 -> O1/1095CV -> 1095
In terms of toughness: O1/1095*/A2 are similar, and D2 is quite a bit less tough.

D2 is substantially more wear-resistant than A2, which is substantially more wear resistant than the others in the list. Means they hold edges longer, assuming they don't chip (enter toughness).

A2 is also more stain resistant than the simpler steels, and D2 even more so.
A2 and D2 are a PITA to finish smooth...

A2 and D2 are both air-hardening steels, like many stainless varieties. O1 and 1095* are usually oil-quenched, which is a slightly more complicated process.

This just in......

I don't want to go to work this morning. Damn the man trying to keep a brotha down.

Man, I hope you're not like me. I have Thurs / Friday off this week and I'm working my butt off on something else. Being at work would be relaxing in comparison!

Sounds like A2 is a pretty decent steel from that little bit of info there Daiz

A2 is one of my favorite steels so far.
However I'm finding that hand-finishing large expanses of hardened A2 is a real chore.
In a small knife? awesome.

For what it's worth, I handled a half-dozen BHK models last weekend at a show.
My picks are the FFG 'muk and the two small Frontier knives. They show the best considered design/shape for practical, comfortable use.

A2 is my favorite carbon steel for a knife, in my modest experience. I think of it as a careful refinement of O1 with few downsides.
It has all the toughness of O1, plus some wear & stain resistance, but isn't over the top like D2, and has no trade-offs to the user (lower toughness=thicker blade, nearly unsharpenable w/o power tools). D2 is perfect for bulky tool & die work when you need a hardened tool to punch out a million parts with very slow tolerance creep due to wear.

My current second choice is Aldo's 1084, which though lower carbon than basic 1095, has some added alloying elements for grain refinement, and makes a stupendous blade with a simple heat-treat (unlike 1095, which can be finicky for some reason).

ATTENTION COMPUTER GEEKS:

I need help. Here is the situation.

I took a backup on the current webhost, and had it store it via FTP on the new host. I am connected to my new host via SSH and I am attempting to move said backup file to the /home directory, but when I type it in, (Using PuTTY btw) mv filenameof_backup.tar.gz /home I get the following: cannot create regular file 'filenameof_backup.tar.gz' permission denied

Any ideas? I assume there is a setting somewhere in PuTTY I am missing somewheres. Also, first time messing with SSH, so take it easy on me.

Was the /home directory previously created? I assume authentication is all good, since you're already connected to your FTP folder on that webhost.

I assume it was. Not really for sure though, this is my first time messing with it.

Purple. I'm almost positive the answer is purple.

Don't know much about computers, but have you tried adjusting your chair and clearing your throat? It's what I do in those situations.

I'm with Murph on this one. If purple doesn't help, his suggestion is a no-miss.

We had a bad storm roll through around 6. Woke me right up.
