Don't believe him. Glass recyclers draft in his wake as he goes through the B&T's.

You guys and your fancy ZT's... :p

Sweet. I like the old school/old looking stuff myself.

Cool, I have a 27'' sledgehammer handle that I think is gonna work, with a lil bit of sanding. I think it's a cut-down sledge handle anyways. It's pretty close to the dimensions listed on hawk handle sites. If I use it I will have to find a new Billy for my truck LOL

I figger if I start long I can cut it down slowly until I find my perfect length.

no black powder folks in your area?
worst comes to worst, I bet you could find some in Rogers, Ar at a certain knife emporium or Branson.
don't wreck your tire thumper - go to a local lumberyard and buy a 2' long piece of 5/4 or 2x ash, maple, or hickory -- a 5/4 x 6 or a 2x4 will make 3 handles. 19" is a good length.
with a 2x board you want the growth rings parallel to the short side (quartersawn).
with a 5/4 you want them parallel to the long side (rift sawn)
if you goof and forget to taper the handle so the top end is wider than the eye, you can wrap a couple layers of cloth athletic tape or grip tape around the end to seat the head on.
if you've never thrown a hawk, you want at least 3 handles, because you will break at least 1.
if you've thrown in the past, you want at least 3 handles because someone will come along who is convinced that "looks easy" and will break at least 1 handle trying it out...

Good morning guys.

Getting ready to head out on the trail for a day or two. Will report findings.

I may do that, I might as well have a full custom handle, I may have some suitable wood laying around already.

Tell me if this sound crazy. but I was thinking of a micarta handle for it. Use a small metal rod for the ''base'' and wrap burlap around it, then I could literally mold the head onto the handle. And I think it would be nigh on unbreakable. If I used burlap or linen it would look kinda like wood, or ''traditional'' looking at least.

Packing up, then heading to work for an hour (seems like a waste) then heading to Springfield, Ill for the weekend... Visiting family WHOOT!

Have fun and drive safe. Although I don't think the drive is too bad.
My brother is over in Springfield.

get a piece of burlap, coat it with resin and roll it up tightly -- once it's cured, sand it to shape?
another thought would be to find a hawk handle that fits, make a mold, then custom "cast" mycarta handles.

whatever you do, stay away from the big green tool store at battlefield & hwy 13 - that place is addictive.

I was thinking wrapping burlap around an existing ''middle'' but I like ur idea better. Just cut a rectangle out, coat it, then roll it up and tape the crap out of it so it's tight while curing. I may not try this right now, but it's definitely going in the Idea Box in my head for a later date!

pee ess tre? are u serious?

I hope he's kidding guys, if not we may have to adjust his medication level! LMAO

Nope, not kidding. Your Xbox would have to stand on a Wii's shoulders, just to kiss my PS3 on the ass.

Sure you get to pay to play online, but I get to play BluRays, Netflix, and a cooler looking console.

Put that in your shot glass and slurp it

I believe Kentucky uses a standard hawk drift or die for his hawk heads.
You can buy replacement handles for a few dollars, if you don't want fancy wood.

I can play online..and I watch Netflix, and I don't care about Blu-Ray (and if I did I can buy a BD player)

and I have the new Slim 360....it is sexay. and It is heat(or motion maybe)-sensitive...no buttons, I just wave my hand and the disk-tray opens.

wedge that in ur pipe-hawk and smoke it! ;)

ATTENTION COMPUTER GEEKS:

I need help. Here is the situation.

I took a backup on the current webhost, and had it store it via FTP on the new host. I am connected to my new host via SSH and I am attempting to move said backup file to the /home directory, but when I type it in, (Using PuTTY btw) mv filenameof_backup.tar.gz /home I get the following: cannot create regular file 'filenameof_backup.tar.gz' permission denied

Any ideas? I assume there is a setting somewhere in PuTTY I am missing somewheres. Also, first time messing with SSH, so take it easy on me.

FTP is evil.
Are you using the same userid to login via FTP and ssh?
On a typical unix host, a regular non-root user can't write directly to /home.
But you can probably write to /home/yourusername/ instead.

This is because root usually owns /home and each user owns their own homedir. If you could write to /home, then you could pollute the shared filesystem and/or (if poorly configured) move other users' homedirs around!

Putty is just a client and has no effect on paths or permissions on the server. It's just a window to the unix shell.

Incidentally, the main problem with FTP is that the contents of the connection, including the username/password exchange, are unencrypted. It offers a tiny window to a stripped down unix shell environment with some specialized commands for shuffling files in and out of the service.

SSH performs a few functions, but in the basic user case, it encrypts the connection so the username/password AND data are all illegible to intermediaries in the network. The next step is to use a public/private key pair to authenticate the user as well, if available. SSH in its basic form also just logs you in and executes an interactive unix shell. However the authentication and encryption channels are the real work, and the same infrastructure can be used to remote-execute batch commands, or copy files around via SCP or SFTP (simple file transfer command sets that use the encrypted SSH tunnel).
