Training wheels - hrmph!

read recently that people who shoot long bow, and can do it well, are considered "advanced" shooters these days. LOL. while it might be true, it's kinda sad, i think...

i still (and will) primary shoot long bow, and recurve... but the deal was too good to resist - a complete, everything, PSE compound, well, mine.

shot a LOT today. my back is going "oh hello!" but in a good way. yar.

Sissy bows have training wheels and matching tree stands because they are too heavy to lug around for days :D kidding. I used to shoot compounds when I was a younger. I just prefer mine these days.

WANT

tell me everything about this :)

do you use a thumb ring? other method? mmm...

i *WAS* saving my bow money for some kind of mongolian style, but then this compound jumped in my hands, also, it's Turkey season, so... mmm. still, i will have at least one style mongolian/horse-bow before long. will not give up my other traditional bows though.

I'm not planning on enlarging the holes.

I intend to make inserts from kydex, or some other substance, and epoxy them to my scales so they fit into the handle cut-outs...then drill my holes in the handle cut out area....using 2 bolts per handle.

I don't quite get what you're describing, but look forward to the result.
I'd use a stepped drill bit specifically for counter-sunk bolts like that - the knife suppliers sell 'em in various sizes.
Clamp the knife atop a piece of scale, drill the shank holes in the appropriate location. Then flip and countersink using the new holes as the pilot. Then, since you don't have registered holes in the tang, I'd clamp the first scale with the two holes in it to the other blank. Then drill the pilots through from the first scale side. Throw a pin in there, then drill the second. Then split 'em apart, countersink the other, and viola - you dance a jig.

thanks, that reinforced what I was thinking, and made at least one step clearer/easier.

What is the part ur not clear on? the insert? I meant I'm gonna make the full-size scales similar to how the zytel for the 14 are, with a raised area that fits into the handle recess to prevent lateral slippage. It may not be needed, with enough force applied to the screws...but I'm a firm believer in Over-Building LOL

gotcha now.
Interestingly, my big beckers have slop in the handles/bolts. I'm sure this is normal - really, the only way to mass-manufacture and avoid hand-fitting. Once they're tight they don't go anywhere. Still, I think it's wise to plan an insert of some kind. Should be cool.

round two with basil haydens. perhaps some call of duty when the wife passes out

Istvan Toth bows, Usually sevenmeadows archery has some in stock, Though waiting for the right color and draw that suits you sucks. I have the mongol and hun bows. They run around 3 bills. Still need to try shooting with the thumb ring. After you learn instinctive shooting on bows with no shelf, compounds are just no fun. My last compound was a pse firestorm light, sold it to fund my arrow making hobby. One of these days I will get a good longbow.

Anybody have any good extra 20"ish axe handles? I've got a Wetterlings project going.

damn i wish i was cool enough for a recurve. I actually just want to be a wood elf in real life, or robin hood. Is that weird? True story, my dad was a amateur competition archer, traveled around locally shooting comps. Id tag a long with my bright red kmart childs bow just wanting to shoot. The guys would put me down at the end and let me shoot during the competitions to keep me occupied. My dad still raves about how i would aim at the ceiling, and put 3 of 4 in the bull at the same range as the comps. He always said i wasted my gift on girls, beer, and rifles.. I havent shot a bow since i was 11 and want one SOOOOOOO bad. I just cant swing a purchase since i buy knives whenever i have extra cash and everytime i have a compound in hand i say to myself that its selling out. Im not the best money saver as many of you know.

Have you considered making your own longbow? Found an interesting looking tutorial online.

Also, Hawkeye = awesome.

Clich...u are a evil genius....and u must have a comission deal with Busse, I am liking this 311 more and more every time I hold it. I need it like I need another hole in my head, but dayum do I want one! As soon as my knife list clears a lil bit, I'm buying one. The only good thing is since they come sans sheath, I may be able to sell enough sheaths to pay for it. Hopefully.

BTW guys, Clich's edge-work? Freaking CLEAN! This edge he put on the 311 is by Clich's own words ''toothy wood-cutter, not a paper slicer'' and it is working NICELY for that! I will use it some more tomorrow, but I haven't managed to dull it any yet I don't think, did a little green and seasoned-wood whittling and cut a 4' length of 550 up into tiny pieces, cuts very well.

I can relate, I would love to run through the woods all day every day. It's a good hobby though and gets you outside more. Speaking of buying, I need to ban myself from the exchange for awhile.
