Randall's Adventure & Training Survival Magazine

If this takes off, Jeff gave me permission to start work on "PlayRAT" magazine.

We can all tell the wives that we "only read it for the survival articles".

jeff this is the shot in the arm that the industry needs, no fluff, just straight facts and straight talk! kudos

Please do this! I am tired of every knife, every new gadget being great. I just want the truth. If it is a piece of crap say so. Also, some of the crap people come up with in new and innovative ideas will get you dead yet people still promote the idea in magazines. I cannot wait Jeff.

...we are NOT dependent on ad revenue for this project. There will be no ass kissin'

To me this is the most exciting part of this project!
I'm tired of hearing (in print) about how great some product is only to see a full page ad for the product. Then hear from experienced outdoors people how much of a piece of crap it is OR WORSE buy it and learn first hand!

Robert Pelton and RAT will be the ones behind the magazine.

Finally, somone who will tell it like it is and give people some real advice and skills that just might save their butt. Can't wait to see what develops!

Okay, I'll be a bit of a prick here.

I like your writing a lot. I especially love your articles that are non-item specific about skills, travel etc. The BOB and secure traveling articles were top notch. In fact, tonight after reading this thread I went to the rat cutlery site and downloaded all of your PDF articles.

I did notice one thing. Even though many of your articles opened with a line like, 'I really don't trust electronic gizmos....', you pretty much gave glowing reviews to every item you reviewed for that particular magazine. Now I know this may be related to part of the the article pitch and it may be related to the fact that you only choose to write articles on gidgets that you actually think are worthy of writing about. So I'm not actually calling BS. I believe you when you write those glowing reviews on items. In fact they were well written and convinced me of the merit of many of the products that were featured in them.

I guess what I'm saying is it would be nice to know that some items get reviewed and are written up as spectacular failures because of the way they performed rather than simply 'saying nothing for being polite'.

Sorry Jeff - tough to call you out like this, but then again you keep asking us to do so :D I'd really love and respect a magazine which just gave the odd -this is crap-review almost like the occasional movie critic will do. That really would be refreshing!

OTB jungle boots suck. Katadyn Hiker water filters suck. Read the upcoming issues of SWAT Magazine. In fact read all the issues of SWAT magazine. There have been several things I've written about that suck.

On the other hand, the Garmin Venture HC is the best GPS I've used. I wrote about Magellan and how bad their new models SUCKED in SWAT magazine - in fact, I dedicated the WHOLE column to just how much they suck. You just ain't reading all the columns! ;)

Okay thats cool Jeff. No I didn't read all your columns just the ones that I could access tonight. Anyhow, just trying to call your bluff and by doing so you revealed I only had a shit hand anyway.

Its one of the reasons why I like this place. Everyone is sitting around the table with a beer in their hand and anybody can call BS on the other. The fun is in the conversation that occurs without the ego.

Take care man!

No problems, kgd. The thing about publishing is readers want to know what works, since telling them what's trash basically takes up ink. With that said, I like to write about something that sucks every so often. When Magellan came out with those new GPS units and tagged them "Reinventing GPS" I knew I had to try it. The closest they would even read on distance is 100 meters, so they were basically worthless. Magellan made the bullshit claim, and SWAT had the balls to let me basically say "they are f**king lying!" No other magazine I have written for will allow me to trash something, so I only write about things that actually worked for the rest of those I write for.

The upcoming SWAT columns on gear from the jungle has a couple of items that are trash and the rest are pieces that really worked as designed. One other thing I'd like to note here: is SWAT has a policy of no free stuff to writers. If I review it, then I bought it with my money. Guns that have to be returned or large ticket items that a writer may not be able to afford are loaned, but no matter who supplies it the supplier knows they are not getting a free ticket on a good review. It's all about integrity.

This new magazine that Pelton and us are working on will be a shift from the norm...from any norm. You will see hard use stuff, interviews, survival skills and might even see a good looking woman or two. You may see some pro writers from the NatGeo circuit in there and a celebrity interview or so about survival issues. The magazine will have a wide appeal. If we actually pull off what we are working on then we're going to sort of break the mold on the typical magazine market. It will be a fun read while teaching something useful. Every day magazines are WAY too serious about their editorial content!

I will subscribe so hard to that that the postal service will break from the strain. :D:thumbup::thumbup:

After reading Pelton's License to Kill book that I got with my HEST knife, I will welcome an opportunity to read anything he writes about on a regular basis in this magazine. I really enjoyed that book. Good, good stuff.

These magazines would be nice to have. I would buy one. Would save me the trouble of having to filter out what "sounds" like would work.
