Random Thought Thread

I've enjoyed the discussions surrounding Magnacut and the excitement that it is drawing. That said, D3V is a known variable for me and it suits all my needs and doesn't present me with any, "I wish it would be better in this [insert blank] area", type of situations. CPKs are forever knives for me so I would much rather wait until Nathan has more formative opinions on it before I make the investment in an unfamiliar steel.

Besides, it's D3V and it's awesome - what more could a guy want? (Except more blades, particularly D3V ones, of course).

Debated w/myself about ordering a DEK3 in MagnaCut in the current DEK 1/2/3 preorder thread but decided against it because I'd prefer to see what it actually looks like before I buy one and because I took these words from Nathan to heart:

" . . . pre-orders (in general) are a terrible idea that I don't recommend. I offer them because people request them. I recommend you just wait on a regular sale."

I also debated w/myself about ordering a DEK1 in MagnaCut but 1) I've already have a DEK1 in 3V, 2) there's a lot to yet be learned about the performance of MagnaCut in the "real world," and 3) I already have 2 Spyderco Mule Team MagnaCut blanks incoming.

Figure I can buy the DEK 1 and/or 3 on the rebound in a year or 2 from others. In the meantime, I've got more than enough knives lying around to play w/already and many other knives that I'm interested in buying.

I was thinking about the MC for the DEK3 but I think I'll wait until Nathan perfects the heat treat for the steel.

Pre-orders are the way to go if you want non-standard/custom options or if you don't want to go through the motions of gunning for a spot during the Friday sales. But yeah, I totally get you. I'm still on the fence about pre-ordering because I likely will just get a standard build.

Apart from asking for MagnaCut, I'd was only thinking about going for the standard builds too - although the thought of a custom double edged DEK3 did occupy my mind for awhile but I still decided against it because of all of the double edged daggers that I already own

On top of that, while I can be patient if the circumstances demand it, I am primarily an "immediate gratification" kind of guy and the thought of going out of pocket for around $400 for a knife that I might not receive for up to 18 months was pretty much a deal killer for me.

The counter argument to instant gratification is the old fashioned, "good things come to those who wait" adage. Personally, I think that Nathan went a bit more conservative than his usual 12 months target commitment / promise / pledge / estimate or whatever you may wish to call it because of a variety of factors, primarily being the biggest plethora of options which CPK has presented so far in its existence then followed by the uncertainties in circumstances beyond Nathan's control such as the supply line issues, the ever evolving C-Vid and related vectors which could all quickly affect a small business. Lastly, I feel that the K18 preorder and its challenges turned out to be a great growth experience for CPK.

At first, I was quite lukewarm about any more DEK variations simply because I already own 3 of the rarer DEK1 models. Thereafter, I'm into this new MagmaWut steel (yup my incendiary derogatory term because I like to rile peep up!) as I wholeheartedly concur with Padri's post somewhere up there (fooque, I can never pronounce or spell his real ID, sorry padri) therefore for me as I go forward is either D3V or if the vaunted real 4V ever returns, although I do have an Elmax left from Nathan just to remind me of days when I used to have some back hair but I diverge! Once I saw the CADs and the writings which Nathan did, I bent the knee, again!

Moral of the story: someone like me who loads up his preorder with all kinda addictive goodies which Nathan offers should bewailing to wait it out for the 12-18 months, possibly even longer if X factors should arise but the rest of you with simpler preorders should be seeing your knives rolling out of Moorseville this coming Summer. Full disclosure, I intend to score some of the less frilly versions during the upcoming Fridays' sales next Summer but I know that if I had skipped the preorders, I'd never be able to get my hands on what I deem as heavily customized versions absence of willingness to pay some hefty premiums to Marc-the-Butcher!

I have changed my pre pre order 3 times. So many options! I already have 2 Dek1. I’m sure the Dek1 in 3V that I have is bomb proof enough that I don’t need a nuke proof dek2. So I’m going with Dek3 with the full dagger grind. I’m going to give Magnacut a try. I figure this one is gonna be super slicey and it will probably see a lot of food prep. Might as well go for the stainless option.
So my last choice is leaning towards OD Terotuf. I don’t have any experience with Terotuf. I think it is the most grippy handle option. Seams like the handle material that would match with a stainless kitchen tool / full blown assassination tool.
Or tactical santoku.
Thoughts?

I would lean away from terotuf if you plan on using it for food prep. Go for g10 or buffed micarta.

Does the grippyness hang onto stuff? Like it would be harder to clean off?
If I’m not mistaken, and somebody tell me, if I am, TeroTuf can hang on to moisture a bit more than the other materials. While this won’t harm the TeroTuf, it may not be desirable for kitchen use because imbedded chicken juice is usually not a good thing. Mike

For kitchen use, I would recommend g10.
I need another kitchen knife, I’ll say it until I get it!

Hard, thin and tall. 8in or more on blade length.

Speaking of blade length, I’ve noticed that some knife makers create chef knives but make them too short 6 or 7in, it is my understanding that chef knives must be 8in or longer in order to be able to comfortably perform (papaya, watermelon, cucumber, etc) or efficiently cut more at the same time (Julianne cuts crossed over)

I also prefer longer knives in the kitchen, but I'd argue that there is no "must".

The thing that keeps me from ordering a DEK2, is this guy:

Happy 4th Advent, CPK crew and fans !
