Random Thought Thread

Speaking of yard work I got not so lucky this week. I had a bunch of poison ivy to get rid of. Last time I tried to pull it out and ended up getting it all around my wrists even though I wore gloves. So this time I bundled up in long sleeves and pants and weed whacked it. Then I went inside and thoroughly washed my face (which was the only exposed body part) with like four different scrubs. So none on my face…but somehow it must have gotten into my socks and up my pants and up my sleeves because my feet and calves and forearms are covered in itchy little blotches.

Here's a random thought.....

Keep a mossberg 930 spx (fantastic shotgun) and mod it a little bit to be more reliable and find a way for a 12" LOP

Or wait a bit for the hype of the 940 pro tac to die down and sell mine to get one of those......

Asking for a friend since anything I own related to that sunk in a boating accident

Yeah. With poison ivy I take the long game. Treat it with round up. Again and again. Eventually it will all die without you ever having to touch it. It just takes time.

Maybe try a scythe, like the Austrian one that Lee Valley sells. I've had mine for years and really like it. Plus it's a good little workout.

To get rid of this I’ve had great luck with Ivy dry. They make a soap , spray , and cream. All work really well imo.

I used to use Roundup and would get 1-2 poison ivy free years out of it but became concerned about possible developmental and environmental negative consequences. It seems like the latest research refutes that so maybe I will spray a round of it this year.

A scythe or bill hook is a good idea too. A lot of what I have is on trees and if I could just cut the stems I think it would probably die off.

In an interesting coincidence, Tom Givens posted a link to this article a little while ago on another site I frequent. It has some info apropos of our earlier discussion. (The title of the article could and should have been phrased better... for obvious reasons.)

CCRKBA: FBI Report Says Armed Citizens Killed More Criminals Than Police

National News September 30, 2021

The FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2020 indicates that armed private citizens killed more criminals during the commission of a felony than were killed by police, and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms says this data clearly underscores the continuing need for American gun ownership.
“We looked at Tables 14 and 15 in the FBI’s new report that apply to justifiable homicides by law enforcement and private citizens, respectively,” noted CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Last year, according to the data, armed citizens killed 343 criminals during the commission of a felony while police fatally shot 298 felons.

“If the FBI data published in their crime report for 2020 is accurate,” he continued, “it is ample evidence that the individual right to keep and bear arms for personal defense is as important today as it was when the Second Amendment was adopted as a cornerstone of the Bill of Rights.

“The use of deadly force is not something anybody wants,” Gottlieb observed, “but neither is being injured or killed by some thug during a violent criminal attack. Self-defense may be the oldest natural right, and every time we hear some politician, public official or gun control extremist call for citizen disarmament, we have to wonder which side they’re on. It certainly can’t be on the side of public safety.

“Gun prohibitionists who enjoy their own private security while promoting restrictive laws that take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens are world-class hypocrites,” he said. “The same people who want to disarm honest citizens are typically those who support policies that are soft on criminals. They haven’t simply lost perspective; they’ve abandoned common sense.”

CCRKBA has long defended the individual right to keep and bear arms, and encourages gun owners to seek competent instruction on firearms safety and the use of firearms in self-defense. Gottlieb noted how studies show that over 99 percent of cases when a gun is used in self-defense, no shots are fired. The burglar, robber or rapist flees or is held at gunpoint until police arrive, he said.

“This data should send a message to criminals that their chances of recidivism are gradually shrinking,” said Gottlieb, who co-authored America Fights Back – Armed Self-Defense in a Violent Age, and more recently, Good Guys with Guns. “The tide has clearly turned.”

Finally caught this damn covid. My son got it after the first week back at school. A week went by with isolating him as much as possible. Then I felt a little crappy yesterday but tested negative. Today I feel much worse and sure enough, positive. If I stop posting it won't be that I suddenly lost interest in knives!

I've had it twice and fared better than any of my jabbed family members by hitting it head on with Elderberry Syrup and vitamins C, D+K, Zinc, NAC, Melatonin, and a few others. It was very mild for me both times. Get rest, eat healthy, take vitamins, stay hydrated, etc.

Hope you feel better soon!!
