Random Thought Thread

We really need “interesting times.” Without them, it’s so hard for people who have good, peaceful lives to really appreciate how good they have it. The Wizard of Oz tells this story beautifully and this is how I explain the movie to my kids. Dorothy has this really nice life but she is unhappy and dreams of going somewhere over the rainbow, where things will be different and more magical and exciting. And when she does, she is confronted with a nightmare where she is assailed by forces of evil and darkness. It’s only after this that she realizes there’s no place like home.
I thought it was about the economy?

So, I mentioned before, I messed up when I ordered the steel plate for the Kukri project and the plate is sized for the blade in the wrong orientation with the material grain running perpendicular to the part. I can fix this by changing the part layout in the sheet, which makes the sheet size larger and gets one and a half more blades in it. (we're going to have a special: off spec Kukris, half off) <----- that's a joke.

Which isn't great but it's a fix. But it's 16.5" and my 16X32 grinder can't deck the new larger sheet size. I've been wanting the next size up auto grinder and I've found what looks like a good used grinder, but it's about $70K. Which is steep just for this project and we really don't need to run big stuff like that frequently and I already have a bunch of automatic grinders here and I'm starting to think I just screwed up and I should just bite the bullet and order more steel instead and order it right this time and then I'm wondering what the hell do I do with this incorrectly sized steel because its's really thick and what do you make with a 6" blade that's 5/16" thick and then I got thinking about daggers again....

Don’t you do that. Don’t give me hope.

£1 = $1.11
Pretty incredible - I have a couple leather jackets from Aero Leather in Scotland and I'm on the verge of placing an order for another one given the current exchange rate....
TL;DR Hard men are good to find
Mae West is that you?

I took it off between ending my old job and starting my new one. Got about half what I planned done but one day of that was spreading ten yards of crusher run to fill in some low spots in my driveway and boy did I sleep well that night.

BTW, update on the war on winged assholes:

I posted a couple weeks ago about finding a yellowjacket nest in the backyard (and somehow, not getting stung). The nest is just ~4 yards from the back door, so no way I was leaving it alone.

Well, for the first time, the Sevin dust + Tempo dust mix failed to kill the nest, and that was with TWO applications.

I first dumped about a 1/2cup of the powder mix on the entrance hole (decided to not wait til night time and just do a quick run past and dump). Later in the day, I saw several of the winged assholes hovering over the powder covered Winter Wonderland, wondering how to get in without landing on the stuff.

The next day, when I checked, they were landing and walking through it to enter the nest, and I figured, "OK. Nest should be dead soon".

2-3 days later, when I checked again, expecting to see no activity, they're still flying in and out, walking through the stuff like nothing. OK, fine. This time, I dumped 1 - 1.5 cups of Sevin + Tempo dust on the hole. Enough to completely block the 1" - 1.25" hole.

2-3 days later, when I checked again, the assholes dug a new exit about 4" - 5" from the original (now blocked with pesticide powder) exit. DAMMIT!

Decided to try a new tactic.

I took a HotShot No-Pest strip and dropped it right over both holes, then put an inverted large transparent Glad container over it (with a brick on top to weight it down so the grass didn't prop it up to leave gaps), to contain/concentrate the fumes so they wouldn't dissipate/blow away, and hopefully gas the whole nest.

It worked. 3 days later, dead yellowjackets under the container and no activity (just ran the mower over the nest).

So there ya go, folks. Another weapon in the arsenal on the war against winged assholes.

I'm excited to see what all the hoopla is about this 3v with the deltas in it.

So one more look into my entertaining work life...

We once attached pvc to an air blow gun to shoot things across our shop..... I found out door panel clips made an excellent projectile once shoved into the pvc....

My first test subject was a former manager in his "man area"..... I loaded the door panel clip and thought "this is a good idea" ......

Fired like a cannon and put him on the ground hahahahaha
