… my best pair of climbing shoes scrunched my feet up perfectly. I was like fecking Spider-Man. Never climbed at the same level after those shoes died. To be fair, a couple (maybe a few) years had gone by when I tried to get back into it.
Yes. Climbing shoes are made to turn your entire foot into a big toe to wedge where it needs to. This is an exception~
Don’t give up on climbing! While we are never as young as we once were, humans have an awesome capacity to adapt.

Pretty sure the car is totaled. Abby is fine, Harrison has whiplash and will be seeing a doctor.

My kids no longer have a way to drive themselves to school

I'm super duper pissed about it.

You don’t have a spare Ford they could use?

On a more helpful note - it’s been my experience that the at fault drivers’ insurance will cover a rental. Assuming you have their insurance contact info, you should give them a call and see.

Teenagers and Rental Cars

satisfied teenage girl sitting in a car rental

The minimum age requirement when renting a car in the United States is 25 years old. However, most major car rental companies allow drivers below 25 years old to drive a rental car as long as they pay the underage driver fee and meet all the requirements. The youngest age allowed to rent a car by some of our suppliers is 18 and this depends on the location as well.

Which companies allow teens to rent a car?

Alamo, Avis, Dollar, Hertz, National and Thrifty allow 18-year-old drivers to rent a car in New York and Michigan for an additional fee. Budget, on the other hand, only allows renters aged 18 in New York. The minimum age to rent a car through Fox is 19, but the minimum age for renters and drivers on government orders is 18. U.S. military personnel and government employers ages 18 or older will not incur a young driver surcharge when renting for authorized government travel.

Which car rental company is cheapest for teenage drivers?

The car rental company with the cheapest young renter fee is FOX Rent A Car, which only charges $25* per day for 19 year old renters. However, Avis has the cheapest underage surcharge for 18-year-olds renting a car in New York while National and Alamo offer the lowest young renter fee in Michigan for renters age 18. Rates may change so make sure to coordinate with us so we can help you find the best deal.

For example:

James wants to rent a car in New York...

James just turned 18 and is wanting to rent a car. He may be allowed to drive a rental car in New York because the minimum rental age there is 18. James will need to pay an underage fee before he can drive. Note that the young drivers surcharge may vary depending on the location. James must check the local policies of the rental location he is considering.

My old Royal Robbins (blue suede) were damn uncomfortable, and they weren't even for smearing, more for edge and crack climbing.

80,000 mile Camry SE, 5000 mile oil changes, always full synthetic, new Michelins. It was a good car that was going to last her into adulthood.
I'm sorry to hear that Abigail was in the accident, and also sad to hear about the car. I had an old Camry that I bought cheap at about 100k miles, and it lasted me another 220k over the ensuing 15 years. They really are good long lasting cars. Cars are just things, and not nearly as important as your daughter, but a good well made thing that is ruined long before its time is still a loss.

Scott Fischer, who famously died on Mt. Everest and which was chronicled in "Into Thin Air" was with us on the Bonneville climb. This is a picture I took of him at the summit. I was 21. He was about 20.

Have you priced a used car recently?

Option one: Here is a nice and very expensive car that should not be given to a teenager cuz they'll just mess it up.

Option two: here is a clapped out POS that is under 10 grand but is going to be a money pit and it represents a bad value.

There are no cheap used cars. There are some that are inexpensive but those are frequently the most expensive.

I'll probably get her a high mileage car that is under 10 grand and pay to keep it on the road as necessary. If I'm smart I'll maybe get the same make and model and keep the old one for spare parts?

Ugh.

...the compound is starting to look like a scrap yard...

I know your pain .... the used car market is pure poop right now

On the positive I'm glad injuries were not more severe

On a negative note... we just got a car in work with bullet holes from a football game last Friday...... a highschool football game

(There were injuries not in the car but near it :( )

Sir you've had a pretty freaking awesome life!
Thank you, yoko. I appreciate that very much.

I can't complain. I've gotten to check a lot of the (boyhood) boxes off, even if I was far from a master of any of the disciplines I engaged in.
Motorcycling, scuba, skydiving, martial arts competitions, SWAT team, mountain climbing, x-c skiing, canoeing, travel, chasing bad guys...it's been a pretty good run overall, and I haven't been cheated...except mostly where I've shortchanged myself.

That said, I've never made a knife from anything but popsicle sticks. And there's tons of other stuff I've never done which I envy the hell out of others for.

There's always something over that hill...

Serpico, rightly or wrongly, was not a beloved character among the old timers back in the day. Maybe because they had something to hide, or perhaps because he was considered a grandstander. Outside of my lane for the most part. I did like the movie.

You know better...

Get yourself a car dealer "new best friend" who can buy you one from one of your local CarMax auctions. Won't be a front line ready unit but if it has ticky-tack "frame damage" announcement, meaning mild prior fender bender, that would be OK as long as it is not an serious accident damage disclosure on Carfax (like your 2014 Camry will end up most likely with a salvaged title). Most of these will need some work but as long as you stick with 2015 or newer, you should be OK. You may need to crank up the budget to 12K to get something a bit more decent in today's market but you are correct, under 10K cars on a dealer's lot are mostly garbage these days because they are 5K-6K auction cars (current market prices).

The wholesale auto market is still quite buoyant up to 20K these days. 40K+ used vehicles have really started to struggle. 20K to 40K, depends on the make and the model.

Don't get a teenager a very high mileage car. Specially if that teen is a college bound female!
Ugh!

Careful, there is a brand already using that name!
