Random Thought Thread

Random thought:

When I wash between my pinky toe and it's neighbor I feel like there should be another toe. As in, it doesn't feel like the last "in between the toe" spot that should exist. Can you have phantom toes even if they never existed?

These are important questions.

Also, am I doing this thread right? :)

You are winning

Heading out on vacation for awhile. What to bring….. knives, toothbrush, and maybe some socks. That about covers it, right?
Well... not one to judge clothing choices (or lack thereof), but I'd recommend at least a belt, so you have something to strap the knives to (and you could tuck the toothbrush into, as well)...

😅

Reminds me of a corny joke. A woman approaches a painter and asks him how much he would charge to paint her in the nude. He mulls it over uncomfortably and says, "I guess I can do that for $5000. But I'll need to at least have socks on... to have somewhere to hold my brushes". 🤣

Makes sense to me, note to self, add belt and more knives. Thanks! Mike

I've been thinking about getting away from the pre-order system.

It would be simpler to make what I want, when I want and sell what I want on whatever schedule works best for us. There really is no good business reason to do pre-orders and they make our business less adaptable due to the scheduling obligations that are necessary. It made a lot of sense when we were smaller and we had all these restrictions in our manufacturing process where our inventory was limited, sales were very brisk and there was advantages for everybody to take orders and scale things up.

The problem with pre-order is, once I have your money you are reasonably entitled to schedules and updates. I don't want to be in that position anymore. It's not fair to you guys and it's not how I want to operate. I think it's time to change our model and do things like the SDFK where we simply make product and sell it on Fridays. Easy peasy.
You shouldn't do pre-orders. They're a bad idea. You already know this. And we appreciate you for doing them anyway. You shouldn't listen to us. ;)

Mori came back for more money. $2,000 for 2 Mb of memory was too cheap. They need more than that. We're up to $2,679.23. For memory.

Fanuc wanted $1,400 for memory for a different Mori but I could look up the chip and buy it new from Newegg for $4 and install it. It's not the cost of the memory, it the cost of knowing which data bit to change. Bastards.
That is truly BS! :poop: Really should be ILLEGAL! 👎

I'm now officially between jobs. Yikes.

it's like being in a dingy in the middle of the ocean waiting to be picked up by a bigger boat... and not really knowing anyone from the new boat past the 30 minute interview that you had with them a month ago.
ONE day??? 🤣 Sorry man, but you need a little perspective. You KNOW you are starting a new job Monday... Try going 8-12 MONTHS without knowing when your next job is coming, like has happened to me a few times the past 8 years in aerospace contracting. That'll get you sweating a little (especially with a family depending on you). You will be fine.

Everybody likes lots of cash on hand, right? Until it comes time to pay taxes on that bank balance. Depending on the random nature of the timing of these things you can see a large swing from one year to the next with tax implications on one hand and cost of capital implications on the other. And, despite my best efforts to manage this shop intelligently, it does (unfortunately) look pretty stinking random when I look at it in retrospect.

Nathan's strengths:
Good machinist
High hand strength
Good at whistling
Pretty eyes
Good at judging lengths and distances
Handy with a charcoal grill

Nathan's weaknesses:
literally everything else, especially running a retail business + manufacturing concern <--- which is why I always try to keep things simple.

Losing Freddy and then gaining Ben created a whiplash in our production. We went from burning though materials (and capital) at one rate, and then a very different rate, and then a different rate again. This makes projecting lead times on complex larger runs require a crystal ball and it also makes long term planning for heat-lots of steel challenging. So, this year saw us ready for the next run of steel at a bad time (4th quarter), from a tax perspective, because we did the Shiv pre-order, and ordered the material for that pre-order, and now they have to make steel. The delivery of that steel is going to fall somewhere around the turn of the year. I probably should have done this a little differently, but I didn't do that already.

This makes tax planning difficult because I need to take different actions now depending on an early January delivery vs a late December delivery.

Timmy, do you have a crystal ball I could borrow? Or disk? Disc? Plate? whatever.

It ain't a big deal. We'll figure it out. Or Jo will.

Jo's strengths:
Almost everything

Jo's weaknesses:
dogs

You did nothing wrong and yes Jo will get it figured out!

Customer Deposits are a Liability Account - Not Income

The Steel order sounds like Inventory to me and or Cost of Goods percentage - Just try to get a invoice before year end and pay it. Then let the Nerds figure it out.

You can have some big swings from year to year but maybe with a little bit of work on the Balance Sheet it should even out some.

I appreciate the preorders but also can see how it can be a pain in the ass.

I know many of you are much more technologically advanced than I am, and probably stream, subscribe, etc. However, I'm shackled to a very sick lady and still watch a pretty good deal of "T.V."

Anyhow, if I have to watch another five-minute "Medicare Advantage" commercial, I'm probably gonna' stab my eyes out.

Just sayin'. Carry-on.

I'd just turn the pointy side around toward Joe Namath or "Kid Dyno-Mite"...they simply have no pride.
