Finally got the time to read the link. Thanks for posting that. It pretty much sums up what I've read (specifically regarding bear attacks vs curious bears); the bear spray effectiveness has been over exaggerated, while the firearms effectiveness has been deliberately skewed.
Reminds me of this story of a recent grizzly attack in Wyoming.

See: https://www.deseret.com/utah/2022/10/17/23408910/grizzly-bear-attacks-college-wrestlers

Both boys reportedly were carrying bear spray but said that they didn't have enough time/warning to use it. However, if the boy who jumped on the bear's back had a handgun and/or a knife of sufficient caliber/size, seems to me he would have had enough time to seriously injure or kill the bear.

And as that link describes, this incident wouldn't be included as a 'failure of bear spray', but if either one of those guys had been carrying a firearm, it would've been included in the 'failure of a firearm against bears'.

One of the recent ones that was unfortunate

https://huntershield.com/case-closed-in-case-of-wyoming-hunting-guide-killed-by-grizzly-bear/

They found the guide's empty can of bear spray. They also found his G20 and the mag with ammo, separate from the gun.

In a different article, it was postulated that Chubon, being unfamiliar with Uptain's Glock and its operation, might've inadvertently hit the mag release before throwing the gun to Uptain.

Uptain removing the chest holster and leaving it by his pack, yards away, while field dressing the elk, proved to be a fatal mistake.

Spray or gun, you’re at the mercy of the bear attack, the confusion, adrenaline, panic, etc. Just after the wrestler’s story came out, there was another attack in Wyoming where the hunter was able to get his handgun out and fire on the bear while it was mauling him. In the mayhem it stopped the bear attack but one of the shots went through his own leg (he did survive).

There’s another story from a few years back where a hunter was being attacked and his friend shot the bear a couple times with his rifle. The bear was later found dead but unfortunately, one of the bullets had deflected off bones inside the bear and went through his friends chest, killing him also.

Having something on you is better than nothing, but nothing you carry is a guarantee!

This is the reason why many departments stopped allowing their personnel to qualify with and carry personal weapons. If you were doing an entry with someone that carried a firearm you weren't familiar with, and had to grab and deploy it...the "oops" factor is greatly increased when the SHTF.

Many of us were annoyed by the policy when it went into effect, but in retrospect, uniformity makes sense. (Different rules for SRT and such, as we carried different weapons there. But still basic familiarity was required.)

And I completely agree with your earlier post. Having something is not the same thing as having it ready to deploy. There's a reason why having the pepper spray in your hand when you exit the "stop and rob" makes sense. There's a reason why you need to know how to draw from concealment quickly, or, if warranted, prep earlier if you see the threat coming and your avenues of avoidance are limited or none.

Nothing wrong with having the pepper spray in your hand, even when walking the dog where the risk of other dogs or humans may be greater than zero.

Reminds me of the story of Wes Perkins in the Anchorage Daily News. Incredible survival.

I actually know him. There is absolutely no reason to have that photo there.
I remember reading about that incident, and the photos, and I concur. If someone wanted to look it up on their own, the sites/links are easily found, simply by searching 'Wes Perkins'.

That he survived the encounter was amazing. That they were able to put his face back together as well as they did, is equally amazing.

Jo must have ordered some pizza for the kids. I wasn't expecting anybody. Mark and I are standing there shooting the shit at the end of the day and I've got a rifle in my hand because I have an insane and irrational vendetta against all squirrels after the damage they've done to some of my things that I care about. And the pizza girl comes down the driveway and sees Mark, who is terrifying, and me standing there with a scoped long gun.

She did not come down to the house.

I put my rifle away and walked up to her and got the pizza. She was very uncomfortable. I feel bad about making her feel so uncomfortable. I tried to smile and be nice, but I'm pretty sure that just made me look like a serial killer.
