Reminds me of this story of a recent grizzly attack in Wyoming.Finally got the time to read the link. Thanks for posting that. It pretty much sums up what I've read (specifically regarding bear attacks vs curious bears); the bear spray effectiveness has been over exaggerated, while the firearms effectiveness has been deliberately skewed.

Both boys reportedly were carrying bear spray but said that they didn't have enough time/warning to use it. However, if the boy who jumped on the bear's back had a handgun and/or a knife of sufficient caliber/size, seems to me he would have had enough time to seriously injure or kill the bear.
