Or, you know, maybe don't disparage other peoples' hobbies? Most people would say the same thing about our knife hobby. "Why do you participate in that stuff? 99% of you won't make a dime. Why don't you go get a job?"

Also, the vast majority of gamers are adults who likely aren't relying on their parents:

It takes a while for older folks like us, to wrap our heads around the stats, and that there are more than a few people earning a living (and in some cases, quite substantial sums), doing things that our own parents disparaged (like 9-year olds who've already made their first million off their YouTube channel).

My own parents refused to get one of the old school game consoles way back when, as they felt it would be a detrimental distraction/waste of time.

Based off the declining levels of physical fitness in youth nowadays, due to the much higher levels of sedentarism from computers/TV/videogames etc., I can't really argue with their general assumptions, even while I accept that some exceptional folks can earn substantial sums from activities that the vast majority will never succeed at (i.e. in general, it seems to run along the lines of kids thinking they'll make big bucks playing basketball, or being a musician/rapper etc. Many will try, but the number that will be able to make a decent living, are a much smaller percentage).

One of the things that boggled my mind, was that a lot of their income was not just from sponsorships, but people paying to watch them play whatever particular game online. For hours.
Streaming has been huge for the last few years. It's just another entertainment stream like traditional sports, TV, movies, etc. Is there really a difference between watching hours of TV vs someone playing a game and providing live commentary?

Yeah, but there's a lot of lazy kids that just want to play video games. I have a friend in Malaysia that says the problem isn't just an American problem. He has friends in China and other countries that say the same thing.
I feel like there will always be people in any hobby who take things to the extreme - even to the point of getting themselves into debt.

And drinking Red Bull's & Monster's until they have heart problems.

To me the amount of income available doesn't necessarily connect with how fulfilling it is. When I was young I thought that winning a lottery and doing nothing would be a perfect life. I thought my parents were crazy for disagreeing. Now, maybe because it didn't happen, I see things differently. It sounds crazy to most people, but there are parts of my work that I wouldn't want to quit no matter how much money I won or was given.

Yup. That was the conclusion I reached after a little consideration.

While I initially thought, "Why watch someone else play? Just play it yourself", I then considered, "Well, how is this different from enjoying watching any other highly skilled people, be it in sports or anything else?".

Nuts to that. If I won Powerball, I'm going to be hunting and fishing for an unhealthy amount of time. Then do a lot of traveling for the next few years. Put a few million into a boutique gun company and either start a knife company or just hang around some. :D

I heard a new word today. Quiet quitters. Wtf is that?

i believe it is people who do the absolute bare minimum to not get fired. walking that fine line. think peter from the movie office space.

What SC16 said. With the added flavor of people doing the minimum (i.e., even less, since nobody is watching) when working from home during COVID.

Just finished the yearly your health insurance is going up meeting. Up 9% this year, really not too bad It normally goes up double or triple that per year. Insurance for 3 of us cost more a year than I made the year I got married. And no I still don't want socialized health care I just want the industry to reel in to something reasonable. Not that I think it will. We are doomed:)

That's the ironic thing - it's generally pretty obvious when someone is doing the bare minimum. It ain't really "quiet."
