You can get some pieces of African Blackwood from Bell Forest products. It's quite cheap and doesn't need stabilizing. It is great to work with. The only issue is that some pieces are more brown than black. You can ask for a particularly black piece, but also when you polish it to a fine grit and apply paste wax it gets much darker.

She had me ship it to Mariel and Margaux Hemingway in Ketchum, ID. (I was working at Abercrombie & Fitch back then in the backpacking and mountaineering department.)

She told me that "Papa would have liked you". Proud moment for a 23 year old.
