Random Thought Thread

when one of the CPK bale needs a little help from themselves, the rest of us help them get their shell straightened out
I’m suffering terrible mental and physical anquish. I don’t have a CPK skinner. Can you help? 🤣. Mike (I put “CPK” in there, just in case some generous soul thought I was looking for just any skinner)😊

Wasn’t sure where to ask this question. I thought about the CPK pet thread. Or maybe the hunting and fishing thread (hell, there are rotini trappers posting there), but decided it was random.

I have chickens. The past couple years there have been two pairs of rough legged hawks hanging out around my yard. And I know they are one of the breeds commonly referred to as “chicken hawks” around here.

But do they really pose a threat?

My chickens are bigger than the hawks.

Have these hawks eaten any of your chickens in that past couple years?

No. But my chickens are aware of them and run for cover in the bamboo when the hawks show up.
Makes me wonder if the hawks are even really interested. They announce themselves, screeching repeatedly while flying around before perching in the trees to watch the chickens.

I found the following...the relevant portion quoted below:

The Rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) is similar in size to a Red-tail, though typically slightly smaller. Rough-legged hawks primarily eat small mammals, though they also eat birds. They could potentially take a chicken but are not commonly considered to be a predator of a backyard flock.

Somewhere in this thread are comments about Mercedes SUVs, forgot where. Ours (GL450) has "Airmatic", a pretty cool feature for towing in particular.

Until it stops working. Errorcode 5150, "Component b22/7 left rear level sensor" needing replacement. After careful shopping for the sensor (normal price is ~$170, I found it for $54):

They will take isolated birds, even if large. We've been raising birds for years, presently with about 3 dozen of them. Impressive that you have not lost any, I'd say just keep doing what you've done for years. Aside from not letting them range, or having a companion animal out there (dog, donkey, goat, etc.) the best defense is prolific structures under which they can hide.

Big reflectors ("owl eyes") sometimes work, but not for long, for us at least.

Chicken predation is actually a fascinating science. We've learned the hard way but you can tell what is dispatching chickens by what remains (or not) of the bird;
-birds of prey typically only eat the wing/breast meat, sometimes legs, leave the rest
-racoons eat the skull and upper spine only
-weasel family (ermine, fishers) eat from the vent (egg exit tube) up and in, going after the egg conveyer belt (a laid egg has about 10-20 smaller eggs just behind it in a really cool size descent). No meat gone, just their hind end opened up towards the belly.
-foxes/coyotes typically take the birds away
-bears smash the he!! out of everything!
-dogs don't eat much and usu. kill more than one

Having ample structures under which they can dash has worked best for us. We just have 2-pallette A-frames all over their field.

Pls PM me if you want to discuss more. Ours is just a modest hobby farm, but we have experienced a lot of growing pains developing it into a semi-function steady state.
👍

I bet all the stuff that crashed or that they shot down over the last couple days or airspace over Montana that they shut down entirely... has nothing to do with future Extraterrestrial disclosure or has anything to do with anything else.

idk. nevermind. like I stated previously I'm in a state of retardation only reached from munching on lead paint chips as if they were pop!corners
