Random Thought Thread

Probably not. It may be too easy around my neighborhood. There is a raptor center a couple miles away from my house. So there are a fair amount of raptors who are used to being fed by humans (while they are being rehabilitated). It’s said that if wearing a gauntlet (the type used in falconry, not the type used in avengers) some of the local raptors may approach you thinking it’s feeding time.

I thought this was a rapper raptor:

Red-Shouldered Hawk?

I was just about to post. After listening to calls, they are definitely red shouldered hawks.

No joke. Half my chickens (3) are Brahmas. They’re pretty hefty looking, but a lot of it is feathers. These hawks look about half their size.
I’m not a birdologist and may have misidentified the hawks - but I’m pretty sure they are rough legged.

Looks more like a Broad-Winged Hawk. They have quite a few different color morphs both light and dark. They do flock up this time of year as they migrate back up to Canada. As stated by Blues post, this size of hawk is into small mammals and small birds. Think Mice/Chipmunk, Sparrow/Dove size food.

Watch the wildlife that’s around your yard at the same time too for clues to what your hawk hunts. If small birds are panicking, hiding and quiet, yet squirrels are moving around and not freezing, your chicken size birds should be fine. If the squirrel lays flat and freezes against a tree or limb, that’s the food size and your chickens are on the dinner plate selection.

And NO Timmy, you can’t hunt Hawks. They don’t eat grain and bugs either so I doubt they would taste like chicken.
