Random Thought Thread

I went to Costco early this morning and when I was headed to the back I witnessed/heard a man (who I assume was the father) "lecturing" his kids (a young boy & girl around 3-4 yrs old each sitting in a shopping cart) about the "value" of $ by repeatedly saying that he bought them this and that for X "fucking" dollars because they (or at least one of them) apparently, had the audacity to ask him to buy something for them that he didn't want to buy.

A woman (who I assume was his wife) was standing right next to him while he was doing this and didn't say a thing. Probably because she's learned not to challenge him. So, sad.

I was tempted to stop to ask him to stop doing that but: 1) I'm not an active duty cop anymore, 2) I didn't have a gun on me and 3) didn't have any backup.

I've been involved in such situations before and they always get ugly and, w/o the authority of law behind me and w/o backup, I figured it was a "no win situation and (I'm not proud to say that) I just moved on.

What would you have done?
I’d stay out of it unless he actually hit someone.

If he’s an abuser, you’ll only make it worse for the children and wife if you embarrass the man because he’ll take it out on them behind closed doors.
Also there’s no need for a weapon in that type of situation because I guarantee that any man that is abusive like that, either verbally or physically, can’t fight his way out of a paper bag when it comes to fighting another adversary his own size.
Abusers are pussies.

I no longer get involved unless life and limb are at stake. Otherwise I mind my own business or make a phone call. When I was younger, before I was ever in LE, I involved myself in several situations. Those days are over.

I'm the idiot who would've said something sarcastic to him..... because that's who I am

Kind of the speak first think later personality lol

This is why I can't talk to customers at work

I don't know if you're a concealed carrier yoko yoko , I know you enjoy firearms. But Darryl Bolke once made a comment during a conversation elsewhere that was so perfect in its simplicity.

"When you're armed, every "conflict" is an "armed conflict" or words to that effect. (That alone demands restraint in "social" situations.)

Before I lost all in that maumee River shark hunting accident I had an Ohio CHL , but that is something that was non existent mentally in my everyday life, I've never been the tough guy or some one that thinks they are invincible cause they carry, but have always been some sort of a smart ass ....

My carry is a life or death situation, never made me more confident in any situation, regardless I'm still a smart-ass in life lol

But the quote you posted is excellent and is something I can try and keep my verbal vomit down a bit!

I can appreciate that

Well, I'm clearly a smartass and have been known to intercede without invitation...but carrying on a daily basis has tempered my instincts to the point of not engaging unless required. A "smart" remark to the wrong individual could end up with both of you rolling on the floor, and from there it's anyone's guess where it leads.

I'm not sorry to have made the transition...especially under current circumstances. (So many active and retired LEOs have had their lives ruined during off-duty incidents...and the same can be said for civilian concealed carriers who do not operate with any mandate to enforce the law.)

I can say 99.9 percent of my public smart remarks are when I'm not carrying lol

When I do carry I'd rather not be noticed

My wife is about 5’2”. A few years back, her and the kids were out shopping. My boys wanted McDonald’s for dinner. We rarely eat fast food… personal preference.
Anywho, they are sitting in the McD’s and there are two 20 something year old males, a father and his daughter (6-7 year old), a couple with their young kids and some guy eating by himself.
Some other guy who went through the drive through came storming in because they screwed up his order. In his rage he left the order out in his truck. He’s screaming at the employees about how stupid they are and cussing quite a bit. My wife is looking around hoping one of the men in the restaurant are going to intervene. During his tirade the guy realizes he has left the f-ed up order in his truck and goes to retrieve it.
As he comes back through the first set of doors and no employees or customers are moving to intercept my wife decides it’s up to her.
So as he breaches the second set of doors he now has an irate 5’2” woman in his path. He didn’t even get a word out before she started to verbally pummel him. Pointing out the children he was doing this in front of, pointing out that mistakes happen…
She then made him apologize to everyone in the restaurant including the employees, and told him to grow up and learn how to handle things like an adult. She then turned to the other patrons and told the males they should be embarrassed to call themselves men and sat back down.
As the red left her vision, she began to realize how stupid what she had just done was. Or at least, how risky. But she didn’t regret it.
