My thought is if you make the hollow grind thick enough to take the impact it would see in competition... there's no point to hollow grind

The s grind can in a sense prevent some of the stick of a v grind while keeping strength

But I'm stupid and usually know nothing about what I post lol

p.s I love hollow grinds
 
If anyone can give you the best answer for that......

My thought is the edge might become too thin with nothing to reinforce it
Had (still have, somewhere...) a Buckmaster from back in the 80s. Thick SOB with a hollow grind. Sliced well for about the first 0.5" - 1", and after that, the thick blade would bind. Same thing (even worse) when chopping or batoning.

***The saw on the Buckmaster, was one of the least effective sawbacks ever put on a knife. It didn't saw very well. It ripped wood, and not particularly effectively either. The 3" saw on my Swiss Army Knife could handily beat it (the saw on a Victorinox is amazingly effective).

What can I say, I fell for the hollow handled Rambo knife craze, too. 😅
