It's not even an excuse. Anyone that buys a Carothers or Busse knife can show what they paid for the knife to the IRS. There's no reason for any buyer to do F&F on large $ purchases.

Inconvenient for the seller, but the buyer has no recourse when things go south. That seems to be happening more and more.
It really isn't, but it seems like 95% of sellers here are using it now. I've passed on a number of deals as a result. Harder to "prove" when you buy on the secondary, but you DO still have the proof needed to show what you paid. Just a royal pain in the ass if you actually have to prove everything.

By my count, this guy just ripped off BF members for somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000... :poop: :poop: :poop:  Man, I REALLY hope they can get their money back!
If he's US based, I had luck in the past with digging up an eBay scammers address and filing a case with the local PD there.

I contacted all the other people who'd been scammed and told them the name of the detective in charge of the case, and to file their cases with him under the case number opened, to ensure the total sum was large.

That scammer was in Brigham City, UT. The Utah DA's office got involved and actually sent me a check for the amount, as I had no way to recover the loss (scammer led everyone by the nose with constant excuses and delays). The included letter said the State of Utah took online scams seriously, and would collect from the scammer. 😲

This was well over a decade ago, so I have no idea if anyone still takes scammers seriously.

Nah, this would be a law enforcement issue. Normies like us can't sue a bank account, but the government can and often does. You'll see a caption that says something like United States of America v. $35,000 in US currency. But amounts of around $1000 are in the area of not being worth the cost of pursuing legally. And I'm afraid there's no way to reverse Zelle payments, it's like sending a wire. You can use a credit card to pay Friends and family though, for a surcharge, which would then be reversible via the credit card. That's probably the credited move for people who don't want to take PayPal goods.
Yeah, I've seized a shit ton of money, (literally millions), back in the day, but aside from not being drug proceeds, this wouldn't move the meter on a federal matter at this amount.

(Marijuana cases in Miami wouldn't go federal if they were under 5,000 lbs to give perspective. Never bothered with them, ever.)

Guys, I wish I had something good to share, but it's just not my area and it sounds like your options are limited. I'd still hit up paypal, the credit card companies, zelle and the banks to see what options may exist. (And a call to the local authorities couldn't hurt.)

I hit up my bank and filed a claim. They say it’s unlikely Zelle will make me whole HOWEVER they did suspend the scammer’s account on the Zelle network so hopefully that helps prevent people from getting screwed in the future.

Getting tired of this PayPal F&F stuff. I contacted my bank and they set up a claim. Going to call again tomorrow, The payment still says pending and he won't even get the funds for another 7 days.
But in all honesty I don't deserve to get saved this time.
I got scammed on facebook back in January and my bank luckily was able to get the funds back from PayPal. I saw another guy on facebook get scammed by the same guy under a different name. Last week another guy on instagram got scammed.
Fool me once...
I 100% take the blame. I saw the signs,
I checked the feedback, I KNEW it looked fishy that the last feedback before this year was from 2019..
He was pushy, asking for a screenshot of the payment just like the others.

I walked straight into this one knowing it was too good to be true. I don't blame anyone here but me.

Is there any thread, or can we start one, that has a complete rundown on the PayPal situation and how to correctly file the taxes?(having original receipts etc) For me, I have been asking F&F in my sales because I simply didn't want to be bothered with the tax stuff, but that's definitely changing. A thread 100% dedicated to safe buying procedures would be nice. Or maybe one where people where people can learn more about taxes...? like me lol.

But no more F&F for me, this is the last straw.

Ouch man, sorry to hear that. Seems like a tough lesson to learn.

For what it’s worth…after talking to my bank it sounds like Zelle is the least consumer friendly (even compared to a debit card or PayPal F&F transfer so I have learned my lesson there!
That's good to know. I didn't realize the Zelle would be who you'd talk to in a situation like this, given (at least in the case at my credit union) they are direct service of the bank. Would have thought the bank handled any issues.

This. And use AMEX. It's a 5 min phone call when something goes wrong. You might loose your Paypal account in the process, but you will get your money back.

Sorry to you all who got scammed :( Really s*cks.

Simple rundown. If you make a profit on a sale, you are supposed to report it as income. So if you bought a knife for $100 and sold it for $100, you would report no income. If you sold it for $150, you would report $50 income, less any fees, shipping, etc. If you ever get audited, you would need the receipts as proof.

This isn't a new requirement, the only big change is that companies like PayPal are now legally required to report sales over $600 (cumulative) a year. Which was delayed until this year.

Before, you were supposed to report it voluntarily.

Man, this is a bum situation all around - I am really sorry to read about this. I saw the listing, saw the eye-popping price, and then was prepared to celebrate your score - this just plain sucks.

I appreciate the feedback regarding Zelle. I don't use it but I recently arranged a purchase of a knife from a maker on Instagram. He was making the case that a lot of makers are ditching PayPal completely and moving to check or money order, Zelle, and Venmo. I generally make all of my knife purchases via a credit card since I get points and cash back - and it's an extra layer of protection since it's issued through my credit union and they simply rock.

This maker wanted to go the Zelle route but you can't use a CC with Zelle - it's a straight bank to bank transfer and I'm not comfortable with it. I'll pay the small fee to use a CC with Venmo and he was ok with that. Your feedback makes me even less inclined to use Zelle.

Zelle, Venmo, PayPal F&F. All buyer beware.
Yep. I can't say I haven't done any transactions this way, but only one was with someone I didn't know, and I knew I was possibly risking losing any and all money I sent them (seller was well-vetted, and everything turned out OK). It's definitely risky, and has slowed my buying on the secondary market significantly.

Ah, See I was under the impression that PayPal reported anything over $600 as taxable Income unless proven otherwise.

I'm not enough of an operator to have a reason to own a multi-tool.

I look at them from time to time and think of how useful it could be, but then I completely forget about it the next day. It's the same thing that happens when I look at a RMJ tomahawk.
Lol I am the farthest thing in life from an operator

I use mine for everything though, tighten bumper stand bolts, the plier heads are excellent so I use them to grab things I can't (finger nail biter sorry)
Flat head to open cans, i can go on and on.. so many uses!

Mine have bailed me out of so many situations when my kids cars have broke down and I didn't bring the right tools
