Random Thought Thread

Dropping into the random thread is always an adventure.

Side note: I just discovered that my daily caloric intake is about 1000+ calories short of what I should be consuming. Now I am stuck trying to figure out where I am going to put all the food I am supposed to be eating.

I've been counting calories.

it sucks. i wish i had known how awesome I had it when I was 18 and turning twinkies into muscle

Right?!

I grew up on a farm and I worked at neighboring farms as a teen. I also cycled everywhere, ran laps around my property, and lifted heavy. I was a machine and ate just about everything in sight.

Nowadays, I am not too bad off that I can't lift, do healthy amounts of cardio, and such. I am just finding that I am running out of gas and between my doc and all the tools that are available these days, I am finding that I am eating only a fraction of what my activities demand. Makes sense now but it's weird to be distressed by this discovery - that I am not eating enough.

Had the same revelation when I was making zero progress trying to build muscle, and realized I was actually eating quite a but less than I thought.

Simple solution was to add a 1/2 stick of butter to my daily food. About 400 calories. Saw progress within just 3 weeks. Up to a whole stick of butter to my daily intake now. It's the easiest way to add calories, with a minimal bump in the volume/quantity of food I have to shove down my gullet.

Interesting. I've read about folks who go out on Arctic expeditions and they take a lot of butter with them. They burn through so much energy that butter is the quickest way to get calories back and even then, they lose a LOT of weight by the time they return.

I lost about 30 lbs in five weeks in the Wind Rivers...from about 165 to 135...and I didn't need to lose weight. Just couldn't make up the caloric deficit carrying a heavy pack and climbing...while eating trout we caught and whatever had been packed in at the time.
