I kind of get it though. I'd be a bit cheesed off if non-residents kept swooping in and preventing me from camping in my own backyard. Which happens all the time, by the way - the PNW is a popular outdoors destination.
I do too. Minor frustration, and partly because it's a holiday weekend that gives us grief. Just haven't had the same sites in 4 years, lol.

That said, we DO have that problem here in CO!!! We don't get any special treatment as residents either! 🤬 :poop: 👎

@Blues and @Richard338 have me large, double lug, insingo, magnacut hunting....
Funny I was searching for a Demko AD20.5 with a Transparent Knives Magnacut reblade the last couple hours. I saw they got their HT at 64hrc. Sadly don't think there is one for sale anywhere.

Anyone know anyone ht'ing Magnacut in those ranges? I see most doing theirs in the 61-62 range. I'm pretty sure the suggested ht Larrin put it at is 63-64 iirc.

CRK is running Magnacut 63/64

I believe there's a hit on toughness but gain in edge retention

(Don't listen to me... I'm not smart... and almost always wrong...... well my wife says I'm always wrong lol)

I haven't seen anyone heating to 64, that I can recall. I believe there are a few heating to 62-63 though. Supposedly protech did that on the mordax.
I have one and I'll say this, I'm more impressed with it (so far) than my pm2 in 15v.
That could change, but that's how it sits right now.

You're definitely right on that one. I have a Dawson Big Bear in Magnacut but they have it at like 61-62. That thing is a 5.5" camp knife type deally though so I'm sure that's for a lot of extra toughness. I wanna say (might be completely wrong) I remember reading Larrins writings on it putting up CPM-M4 toughness or more at that range.

While I want a Sebenza in Magnacut as well.. I'm not trying to spend $600+ at this very second. Kinda wanted to play around with something pushing high numbers first before I pony up that kind of cash. If it's not something anyone is doing in the ~$300-$350 ish range that's okay too.. I'll just say screw it eventually and buy the sebenza in it anyway lol.

Oh nice! I love protech stuff. I remember they did a malibu in magnacut as well. You happen to know if they were in the same range? I can't find that info for whatever reason unless I'm overlooking it. I can't imagine they would change their treatment for different knives.

In a small blade I'm okay with losing a little toughness, to gain retention at this point I like a steel that will hold an edge... but takes an easy quick touch up and in my experience with a magnacut mule ... it does that well

(once again...I'm am idiot and what I use my knives for at work is way different that what you might use yours for)

And I also never owned a CRK but my friend woodysone woodysone let me run one through it's paces , and I completely appreciate them waaay more then i ever expected, simple but functional, excellent handle to blade ratio, encouraged to be taken apart and cleaned ... meant for use

When I used a CRK it only made me more excited at what Nathan will put out!

I haven't either. I just saw that Neeves Knives video on that Demko and he stated it was at 64.5hrc.. but that might've been a typo for all I know.. maybe he meant 63. I take a lot of youtubers knife stuff with a grain of salt anyway.

Is the CPK folder supposed to be in Magnacut? I saw Nathan's Magnacut video a while back and wasn't sure what knife he intended to use that heat treat for.

In all honesty , I'm excited to run folder in D3V from Nathan

Takes an awesome edge, holds it, touches up easy, and what I do doesn't chip when I clip a metal sheeting holder when I'm cutting ultra thin plastic from it (although I'm using D3V that is a bit thicker on a fixed blade)

I go from thin plastic sheeting to paper similar to phone book paper, accidentally smacking steel stands that holds these, zip ties, cardboard and trimming wood paint sticks to hold things up or open

Very much a D3V fan

True that. While we're on the subject of new awesome steels. I assume a lot of you have already read up on Larrin's ApexUltra steel too. His second steel developed.. apparently intended for hand forged stuff with an upper limit above 66hrc. Stuff sounds crazy.. I'd love a kitchen knife set in that.

I believe the Malibu had similar hrc. I've been beating on my mordax and it's done really well.

I'm a big fan of d3v, but I haven't had to re-sharpen it yet.
I love the edge I can get on magnacut. I'm sure d3v will be just as satisfying.

Nice. I'm gonna look for one now. I love my Malibu in 20CV. Not sure what I'll do with it if I buy this though lol. Probably just get a wharnie in Magnacut so I can justify keeping both blade patterns (at least to myself lol)

D3V sharpens pretty easily for me and has a nice toothy edge at courser to medium grits. That magnacut stuff I can get screamin too though.. but a little easier despite it being harder.

Agreed

I like to run everything I have with the same sharpening method so it's an even playing field... blade thickness is the difference I run into

I use venev stones (finished at 400) followed by a 6 micron loaded strop, then a quick touch on a 1 micron diamond loaded balsa strop

S110v and maxamet hold a great edge but give like a cheerleader after a few beers at prom against something hard

D3V (even though I'm still trying different things) does awesome with a lot of things when you sharpen it with ... diamond ... diamond strop paste
.. hell regular strop bars at a fine finish etc (and I'm not to worried to smack something like a steel stand with it lightly)

Magnacut for me will work with older sharpening methods but works really good with diamond stones and paste (this is on a spyderco mule i have) but it's stupid stainless I've used it in my kitchen and put it away with things I should've rinsed off with no issue... why i think it is an awesome kitchen steel!!!!

(Once again friends.... don't listen to what I say...I know nothing, and enjoy a ridiculous amount of beer)
