Random Thought Thread

Lorien, my sincere condolences to you for the sudden loss of your friend and collaborator. For those who may not know, there's information about this sad news on the Custom & handmade forum. I was very interested in his folders since Lorien had posted some photos of them in the "what folder" thread and also because I wanted to do a deal with Bob on one of them but the tight budget did not permit at the time. While I'm on this sad news, I'd like to extend my condolences to Bob & Nathan too. Very sorry for your loss and the loss to the whole knife loving community. RIP.

Yes, condolences to Lorien, Bob, Nathan and others who knew and worked with the man.

At these moments I am reminded of the vital importance of creating and leaving a legacy. May we each be blessed enough to do one thing well that out-lives us....

Only just learned about this, glad I saw your post, Mat, but sad about the content. Bing was a great guy and will be missed.

Bob, I almost emailed you about the sad news last night just after our email messages regarding the other stuff we were talking about but I refrained because I thought that you may have already known or even if you hadn't heard, I didn't want to ruin an already late eve by being the bearer of terrible news.

I just took the liberty of posting it on here because of the Lorien connection. It has indeed been a very sad and tragic sequence for Lorien in the recent past with the passing of his friends. Again my sincere condolences to our CPK-Buddy Lorien.

That's good, so many more of the 3v's had the tumble, rather than this satin grind. Looks great!

Noting those fittings, I presume the blade finish was just done, along with the fittings being changed to no finish?

Thanks Bob, It's the one I purchased from Uncle Mat, Had Josh@Razor's Edge do a proper Satin Finish and Go Ahead and Bead Blast the Fasteners! Josh told me and I quote I don't know what I was thinking accepting a job refinishing/sanding 3v ugh! I went through like 30 belts lol
The Pictures are from Josh, should receive it Tuesday or Wednesday:D

It is absolutely gorgeous! I really like the job he did, kudos to him. I need to keep him in mind, but never tell him it's 3V, LOL.

Edit added:There is just something way cool about those scales, coupled with a perfect satin grind and those bead blast fastener. I personally think it looks cooler this way than with wood scales.

Bob, that’s the one with the carbon spots which I had bought from you for the puorpose of becoming a future user. Josh did a fantastic looking job on it for Tommy

Tommy before Uncle Matty’s brief possession it was Bob’s and for a very brief moment it almost became Grog’s ;)

I’m sure that it has had other owners before the three of us :P

It looks GREAT bud. Good on Ya and enjoy

Mat, that's what I thought. I am just never quite sure of lotsa stuff when it comes to utilizing a sometimes faulty memory, lol. With your having mentioned it, I can say that he did a magnificent job, knowing exactiy how it was when you got it. Kudos - again - to Josh @razors edge.

Looks great Tom!!

Nathan did one in really dark black African Blackwood and full satin in 3V, with a razor sharp edge applied to the swedge where both the grind lines of the secondary bevel match at the tip. It is still nicer, promise.

Tom, still like yours a lot! But no one has matched Nathan’s two publicly sold wood Shivs from my perspective! Generally speaking Nathan seems to get things just right. Josh did a hell of a job and I’m glad he got a platen from Nathan, the plunge alone was worth it.

You deserve applause for fixing that beater up!

Justin it really wasn't a beater, more like a guy who thought he was a ( Blade smith) and could strip it and put a Satin Finish on it while reading the instructions! Whoever attempted to strip and put a Satin Finish on it "Failed Miserably" and should never be allowed to attempt or duplicate that process again!

Totally agree and it was not beaten on at all and in fact I don't think that it was even used for any purpose like it was intended for (most in the wild were not anyway!). Just someone thought that they were up to the challenge of putting an extra fine hand rubbed satin on it and failed at it pretty badly. The way that you commissioned Josh to resurrect that ugly duckling and the way that Josh shined at the task is very commendable.
