Random Thought Thread

If only they'd had the foresight to start a knife company together...

''Moustache Eye Black Knifes''

That DOES have a nice ring to it.

Not so random thought....I think it is entirely possible that the HDFK will be worth its weight in gold before long given the price folks are getting.
If people stop buying them for $1000+, the secondary market prices will come down. I doubt that they'll drop below $1000 though. Maybe it's FOMO, maybe it's that collector's bug I haven't caught. Demand is high, supply is low, so it's understandable.

I don't collect knives and I try to limit my spending on them. I've realized that if I buy a knife on the secondary market, it's eating into the funds I'd prefer to give to Nathan and the rest of the CPK crew. I want them to get my cash because I want them to keep innovating and turning out great products.

If that means I miss out on a couple models, that's fine with me.

I'm happy to let others grab those HDFKs that pop up from time to time. I'll wait for other CPK releases to support the makers as much as I can afford to.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I'll never buy second hand or that I'm opposed to it. There's definitely something to be said for knowing that you won't have any issues selling a CPK if you don't like it, though. The fact that you won't take a loss if you decide to sell it sure makes it easy to buy now and think later.

Just my two cents.

Regarding the HDFKs' secondary prices it is worth to revisit some of Nathan's own sage words on this subject in response to this oft discussed topic. The trail listed below in from late Jan 2022:
If I can put this in the kindest of terms, Nathan's estimates of demand are....typically understated.

I think it's reasonable to put "new" HDFK pricing at 450ish, maybe 500 and I don't know what he'd need for a production run but if it's in the low to mid 3 digits I expect they would all sell.

If there were 100 HDFK knives for sale at $500 each, every single one would sell out....in under one second. I'd bet anything on it. Lol

I was merely revisiting Nathan’s posts which I had remembered reading in the past. I did not want to interject in that post with my own opinion but FWIW, I think that the HDFK is currently a 1K+ knife. IIRC, there was another post somewhere in the past by Nathan which had implied (maybe his opinion was even more explicit) the same kind of valuation trajectory.

In today’s market considering the price and the availability of material, labor and other overheads, I don’t think that Nathan would be making much of a profit by venturing into making the HDFK pattern based on Lorien’s original NASK prototype, if the finished product was going to be offered at 450-500. JMO.

Hoover sucks, I had to completely disassemble this upright vacuum so I can change out the power switch that broke, a whopping 28 screws were holding the two halves of the upright section together! WTF. The power switch wiring runs in between the halves, down into the motor and it’s not long enough to simply pop the switch from the outside, pull some wiring out and splice in a new one, it had to be a damn autopsy.

Perfect example. The AC window unit we have in Jo's shipping container stopped working. Pretty nice AC unit. Not that old.

-our windows AC unit should have an integrated circuit board!

Ok

-with transistors and a PLC logic controller!

Uh

-and a Wi-Fi connection for the remote that connects via a regular USB connector, buried inside the unit

...now wait a minute...

At least it didn't have "Windows Inside! ™ "

^ edit to add: probably due to cost constraints rather than elegant engineering, but I'll take it.
