Perfect example. The AC window unit we have in Jo's shipping container stopped working. Pretty nice AC unit. Not that old.

-our windows AC unit should have an integrated circuit board!

Ok

-with transistors and a PLC logic controller!

Uh

-and a Wi-Fi connection for the remote that connects via a regular USB connector, buried inside the unit

...now wait a minute...

At least it didn't have "Windows Inside! ™ "

I'm going to be in big trouble once we start doing social credit scores and stuff because I'm probably going to be getting canceled a lot. People are so sensitive.

Hey! Want to hear a racist joke?

I'm looking forward to the next microchip shortage where the electrical engineers will have to finally just go back to designing stuff with out microchips. Because there's microchips in everything. Things that don't need them

What ? You don't want your washer and drier to do little (and different) songs, when a program is finished ? :)

(Point being that it has to do with customer expectations, too)

And, BTW, the shortage that we had during the pandemic is over. Instead, manufacturers overstocked, so less designers are needed, so there are layoffs now. It's a hog cycle.

^ edit to add: probably due to cost constraints rather than elegant engineering, but I'll take it.
Yep, let's pack more and more fragile electronics into stoves, toaster ovens, etc so they can overheat and fail, all so you can connect to them with your phone...to do what? People have forgotten...just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
