Okay so I've got a rusty truck here. (bed and frame)

I need to scrape this off and paint it with something. What would y'all recommend?

Had to do this a couple of years ago to a Tacoma I bought at auction. The frame was completely rusted out underneath, worst case I had ever seen.

Spent hours meticulously going to town with a wire-bristled brush head attached to my drill then coated it in POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating.

Never had any issues after that, but I live at altitude where its pretty dry.

Why worry about it? That steel is thick enough that the paint is just aesthetics.

I was going to suggest POR as well, but check the instructions. I have a vague recollection from my off-road days that some of it is not UV resistant and needs a top coat of something else.

I don't know if it would be cheaper or cost more, but maybe something like the rhino bed liner (or similar without the brand name cost) would do the trick and give some protection for the use. I had a smaller trailer I use for mowers and ATVs and to haul wood with sprayed and it's held up well. I would have done it myself , but the body and paint guy owed me a favor so I'm not sure the cost vs other options.

And I thought that rusty cars were fashionable.

I recently read a post somewhere that there's a DIY version of bed liner in-a-can. Supposedly works somewhat well, and is much cheaper, of course.

Whichever the choice;
- Prep, prep, prep. The most important part. Get as much of the rust off as possible. Use one of the numerous paint/spray-on paintable rust converter coatings (not stuff like POR-15 that isn't meant to be painted over. Rust-oleum, Iron Armor, Eastwood etc., all have their own versions).

- this video seems to indicate that Plastikote's DIY bedliner would hold up fairly well as a paint substitute (vs in comparison to commercially applied bed liner in a soon-to-be-abused truck bed).

That said, Rust-oleum High Performance Enamel spray paint actually holds up well.

Rust-oleum Exterior (paint+primer in a can) is an interesting option. Followed someone's project, painting their car with the stuff, years ago (they'd used it on their patio furniture and old BBQ grill, and had been impressed. Said it held up very well on the car, and touch ups for rock chips was a breeze).

Everyone above has great answers!

Wire wheel works good but can take some time

Brush on coatings will be the easiest to apply

I have used por-15 a lot without any problems AR-Trvlr AR-Trvlr is correct you will have to use por-15s top coat to give uv protection (it also seems to level out nicely when brushed on)

Roll on bed liner is another good option but I've seen the cheaper ones peel off in sheets after being out in the weather

There's a lot of mobile media blasters these days that might give you a good price also

Honestly how much effort do you want to put into it?

Quick fix or keep it nice long as possible?

The truck is 7 or 8 years old and relatively low miles (68k). I don't know how long I will own it, (that depends on how well it serves me). I don't ever like to half-ass something but I also don't like to go way out into left field either? It is rusty and it can't stay like this but I'm not sure how much effort is necessary to get a good long-term workable fix.

Por-15 with the added uv coating would be a nice durable finish

The prep on removing the rust can be time consuming..... mobile media blasting might be the quicker solution
