Ordered a Henry magazine last week, and it’s already here today. Time to oooo and awwww over some nice lever action rifles.
I got the Henry catalog a few weeks back myself ! Must be Dan Bongino’s fault, right ?😉 When you decide on which one you want, let me know pard. Still debating, myself.

Here he is on a couple of magazine covers from back in the day...

I can’t see the date on the Black Belt Magazine, but the head of our organization, Richard Kim, used to write a monthly, short story about the early martial artists and samurai. I saved a bunch of the articles. It would have been around the early to late 70’s. We would go up to where he taught in San Francisco, to train with him, just about every Saturday. After the class, we would go to Japan Town (can I still say that?) eat lunch, and then go to a samurai movie. Great memories. Mike

That sounds right. Most of the tournaments I participated in were in 1978.

I went to shotokan in my early teens. There it went White, Yellow, Orange, Green... I remember dyeing each step in the progression in the kitchen sink.
Somehow, my Goju-ryu school mostly avoided the rainbow belt system (which I'm convinced was started as a cash grab by the McDojos).

We just had white, brown, and black. The kyu rankings were denoted by black stripes across the ends of the white belts, and yellow stripes across the ends of the brown belts (and 1st kyu, the rank before black, had a yellow stripe in the center, all the way around the belt).

Being even cheaper SOBs, what a few of us did, was instead of having the stripes sewn on, we used electrical tape 😅. That way, once we got to the next colored belt, we'd remove the stripes and sell our old belt to some newbie (who was proud to have a 'weathered/well-worn' looking belt vs other newbies with their brand spanking new belts. A concept/aesthetic that we of course, created a demand for) 🤣🤣🤣

The only belt we had any desire to keep, was obviously black.

My dojo did the same thing with electrical tape...for the in-between steps..."high white" and such. I can't remember if they had something similar for the low end of the rank. I remember feeling proud the day I earned my green belt...following sparring and katas.

Oddly enough, that belt ended up being used as a tug toy with my dogs until it was no longer durable enough to withstand the strain or safe for them to chew on.

When you get a shipping notification, and you click for the details and it just says, "Shipping Label Created" for the next 4 or 5 days....

iu

I actually am suprised it was shipped, earlier than expected..... (you're an animal Jo the Machinist Jo the Machinist !!)

Plus I'm sure I'll do something stupid with it that will make my neighbors question living next to me even more lol

I’ve been doin the same for some kuiu gear that’s on the way… thanks to this forum for introducing me to that brand… i don’t know what’s stronger, the sense of appreciation for now knowing, or the resentment my pocketbook is now harboring … yall are a terrible influence 😂
