Random Thought Thread

#notnathan
#notadoctor, but after having worked as a nurse for a few years in ER, ICU and home care:

-To avoid diabetes, eat meat, greens and healthy fats (think fish, avocados, nuts, cooking with olive oil vs canola) and reduce/avoid carbs and sugar (bread, pasta, soda, beer- sorry @yoko ❤️!). Move every day

-lots of things can cause pancreatic inflammation, the modifiable risks for most people are probably to stop drinking alcohol, and to stay hydrated. Pancreatitis and diabetes are different problems. Pancreatitis does not necessarily lead to pancreatic cancer.

-my wife and I have both been prediabetic in the past, and we had good luck decreasing our fasting blood sugar with a keto diet, but it's not suitable for everyone. For example, if you already have chronic pancreatitis a higher fat diet could actually work against you.

But if your doctor tells you you're prediabetic, dropping your carbohydrate intake way down and upping your intake of healthy fats (from fish, nuts, avocados, olives) could make the difference between needing to go on medication or not.

Either way, good work thinking about how to take care of yourself.

B bluemax_1 , B beeinak , any thoughts on this stuff? You guys are the medical CPK'ers I can think of at the moment 😆
You've pretty much covered it.

Diet and exercise are 2 very big factors for avoiding Type 2 diabetes. Lots of folks have been able to get off their meds simply by losing weight/bodyfat, and modifying their dietary habits.

*** Conversely, the ones who've wound up as amputees, are generally the ones who did the exact opposite, unwilling to make necessary changes to their lifestyles and poor habits, or lose the excess weight.

We have only one body. Take care of it.

Just adding to Non.Nisi.Te and Bluemax.1 nicely stated, diabetes is really not pretty and never shown in TV/movies. So many issues that could be prevented. One issue we see here is certain folks with neuropathy who don’t know that they have issues with their feet until it is really serious. Being in cold climate it is easy to have socks on a lot and not notice things.

Aside from exercise and hydrating (non alcohol), eating sensibly, not smoking(really constricts vessels and makes them hard so they cannot dilate as easily-increasing pressure and becoming brittle and prone to aneurysm)- I encourage folks to take cinnamon capsules as it can help regulate blood sugar without crazy interactions with other medications. Patients always say “I am going to start exercising and eating right”, when their A1c is sky High. I like to get them on meds to drop the sugar and then watch them closely to adjust as needed and hopefully titrate off meds.

Pancreatitis can be truly horrific as far as pain. Gall bladder issues can cause problems as well as alcohol. I usually ordered amylase, lipase additionally when working up acute abdomens.

I saw so many patients in critical care as the result of uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, alcohol abuse, drug abuse that could have been so much better if the patients and providers were proactive versus reactive.

It's expensive for sure. Sorry to hear about that. What a pain!

I know it sounds crazy, but this helps with minor sicknesses.

Mix up some raw garlic and olive oil, then put it on the bottom of your feet and wrap them in plastic wrap, then put on socks.
You can do this before you go to bed and then just take it off when you shower the next morning. It really helps.

Edited to add context: Some of the largest pores on your skin/body are located on the soles of your feed. It helps with absorption and has a different effect than ingesting the garlic and olive oil.
All that made me do is feel like adding some mozzarella and dough and eat it in the morning...

As a diabetic for 30 years now, it astounds me how people can go about their lives with hyperglycemia and not take immediate actions to bring their blood glucose down. High blood sugar sucks. Fees like you’re tired, hungry, and a dried out sponge. And that is just the beginning.
I tell my patients that their body is made to move and it NEEDs to move.
Our society isn’t set up for health and wellness, on a great deal of levels, and type two diabetes is a consequence, among other things.
I am also irritated that type two diabetes gets all the funding and attention.

Being type 1 is like playing life on Hard mode.

Was definitely mind blowing

It's crazy how much we are connected to people and don't even know it till later in life
we are all connected to everyone, and deep down we all know it. Unfortunately there is hay to be made in convincing us away from this fact.
My wish for 2024? Peace and Love✌️❤️

I use to eat that amount of calories every day when I was training for strongman. Never moved slower in my life when I wasn’t training.
I get that she works out regularly, but I have to wonder if she 'purges' after doing these videos? That's a pretty tiny woman, eating a LOT of food. I think the first time I saw one of her videos was the 72oz(?) steak + sides challenge ~3 years ago.

I think my wife showed that, I remember something similar to what you’re mentioning. I however am not a tiny woman.

Is there an affordable thermal pistol optic?

I want to mount something I can afford on a quiet .22 Ruger pistol as a squirrel removal tool because I have found that thermal defeats camouflage really well.

Strongman eh? Is that like CrossFit?
(I kid!! I kid!!)
You actually raise a valid point Richard. While I can’t stand a lot of crossfitters and the cult like mentality of a large number of them, they do incorporate a lot of strongman regimes in their workouts and I respect that. However, the weight amount and actual static strength required for dedicated strongman movements and training is worlds apart.

I got an electric throw blanket for Christmas and it's the best thing since sliced baloney.

I believe it's a re-gift from a woman's work Christmas party.

And Wholly smoke. This thing is nice. Wake up in the cold morning. Make coffee. Sit on the couch to read the disgusting news with the blanket on setting 1. Sometimes 2. It hasn't been cold enough for 3 and you could bake bread with setting 5.

I've had to fight my dog twice over the blanket after he figured out it's heated. The cat found out too. If I pull my throw blanket out. There will be some critter of the house right next to me or on my lap.

Who would of thought that some small electronic blanket would so incredibly nice.

I think holosun or sig just came out with a thermal red dot. Alternatively, you could go with a monocular, which is a lot more affordable. FLIR makes some decent ones.

Edit: confirmed it's holosun that makes a thermal red dot.
